I have an agreement to purchase a 1984 Hunter 34. I had boat surveyed and she suveyed well with the exception of significsntly elevated moisture levels found on cabin trunk and adjacent deck areas out board of the ports. Readings of 85 - 100 on the tramex scale were observed and moderate to highly compromised soundings. The suspected "culprit", the ports, have all been replaced and rebedded so further moisture intrusion in this area has largely been mitigated. Owner maintains he was assured by mariana and Hunter Marine that coring on this model was not so much structural as insulating in nature and the thickness of the glass would prevent the development of soft spots (none are apparent currently) and maintain integrety of the deck. Truth or smoke blown you know where?

I would walk, unless cash is passed back to you and you are happy with the risk. Asking the surveyor about the "structural/insulating" would carry more weight with me, than the PO's marina (they really don't know the details of a boat) and WHO at Hunter he has assurances from.

IMHO, this is just too much of a buyers market to risk being let down or unhappy a year from now, when this issue rears it's affects. That is just too much wet glass for my likings. The soundings confirm this pretty suredly.

wet deck/moisture issue

I concur with latter suggestion, walk away.there were hundreds, over a thousand 34`s built.I owned a 1988 34 back in the 80`s.No problem with that boat however I`ve had to deal with with deck issue with other boats and its a pain to deal with, and then when you go to sell the boat.

The presence of such extensive moisture, regardless of the structural concerns, significantly lowers the value or future marketability of this boat.

Thank you both for your insight. You are confirming my thoughts. I guess i just hoped there was a differing concensus. The surveyor did indicate he felt the decks would be servicable for a decade or more but who would buy the boat then? Thanks!
