Death of the tall rig ...............

Ah progress!I have been informed by my Catalina dealer that the factory is no longer making the tall rig option available for the C36MKII. Any thoughts on whether this is a tragedy or not?I was on the latest model at the "Boats Afloat" show recently and there have been some running changes to it. The hardware has been improved (blocks, track cars, etc) and the interior has much upgraded upholstery. There are now full coil spring mattresses in both berths although with only 12" of "legroom" in the aft berth now, sex there is out unless you want to risk a major back injury. There is also the fixed block to mount an outboard on the stern rail, ala C350.It's still my fav and the best 36 footer around.

C36 rig

Hi Bill -Interested Catalina wouldn't offer the tall rig anymore - it's a nice option for places like Puget Sounds. I'm a little surprised Catalina hasn't gone to the double spreader rig ala C350 - seems it would be easier for them to ship the same rig. As far as I know, only the 30, 34, and 35 still have the single spreader rig.I agree with your sentiments on the 36; I still have a soft spot in my heart for my old 1986 C36.Trevor

Are you sure that this is only with regards to

the roller main furnished boats? From what I understand they are pushing more and more boats with the roller furling as they is what more people are requesting, but I think you can still order a non-roller mainsail boat and also order the tall rig.Maybe thats all the dealer up have in stock so that is what they want to get off their "lot"I'll have to ask at the next boat show I go to.

from what my dealer told me, an I consider his word to be as good as gold, the factory just decided to stop offering it. His thought was that there had not been that many orders for the tall rig. He said the factory "just tells us what they're doing but not always why". They dropped the tall rig option on the 390 also about a year before they stopped building that model and the 380 in the last couple years and I think the 387 is only available with the standard rig. I'm just wondering if the tall rig really provided any noticeable improvment in performance........maybe I should look for a 2004 model instead of this one.

Tom...one other thing

you may be correct with your comment about the growing popularity of furling mains. Perhaps they are just trying to standardize things but a C36 without a tall rig just?......it's just wrong!......oh my breaking heart.Frankly, I am not all that impressed with the furling mains. During a test sail on a Hunter once, the salesman had to jump up on the coachouse and screw with the thing to get it to furl. What if you need to drop the sail quickly and your furler hangs up? Most of the Hunters I see being demonstrated here on Lake Union have the furling main nowadays but it eliminates the only advantage a Hunter has...the big roached main, because you lose the roach with the furling main option.I'll stick with a standard main, I'm not that old yet.
