Hi I am from Canada and purchased my Boat from a brokerage in the USA. I have a few questions. When a boat changes hands in the USA does it become de registered automaticly? I went to register it in Canada and they said I need proof that it is no longer registered in the USA. How can I obtain this info? The Coast Guard Documentation was signed over by the previous owner but it didn't state who it was sold to. Should that be the name of the broker as my bill of sale is from the brokerage? Thanks Dave

DE-REGISTER OR DE-DOCUMENT?

Dave... Welcome to bureauocracy south of the border!!! There's a difference between a boat that's been registered in a state and a boat that's been documented by the US Coast Guard. I think you've bought a boat that was documented and will need a Letter of Deletion, a/k/a Evidence of Deletion from United States Documentation. When the previous owner cancels his documentation, he doesn't specify to whom the boat was sold; that's taken care of by your Bill of Sale from the brokerage. Go to the US Coast Guard web site (sorry, I don't have the link handy) and you'll see what it's all about and what's required. They do have a special fax line for these requests; the number is 304 271 2415. You have to fax the same stuff as you would mail, but the cover letter must have all of your credit card details. It'll save a couple of days. Have fun - be patient!!! Paul s/v Pretty Lady

No "de-" process

Dave, the state and federal process in the US is passive; that is, you are no longer registered when you fail to return your fee and paperwork in the required time. Unlike automobiles the state does not require you to return your number plates or registration sticker (because the sticker usually expires automatically on the last day of the renewal period, so you can't go around with an invalid sticker even if you wanted to). They also don't make a fuss about removing the numbers when you aren't registered, since the sticker determines whether you are current. Likewise, the Feds don't require you to remove your old documentation number from the vessel because future owners can reactivate the number. And the Coast Guard title for a documented vessel is not normally accepted by state authorities for registration because it doesn't have complete information needed for certificate of title. So what can you do? The US Coast Guard has a web site to look up which vessels are currently still documented (see link below). I don't know how you get your vessel off the list if it is still there, but it will fall off automatically when the owner fails to pay their renewal in the course of the year.

soooo

Thanks for your help. So the form I have here is a Certificate of Documentation and expires September 30 2004 so for all intents this vessel could be considered unregistered? The service status on the website shows in service, is that different from the registration status?

Removal from documentation

Contact the national vessel documentation center, and tell them what you are hoping to do. There is a procedure for removing a vessel from US documentation, that includes such things as removing the documentation number - usually this means grinding out the numbers. I don't know if you need a witness to the removal or not. You might be wise to take before and after pictures. The folks at the NVDC are the nicest most helpful government employees I have ever worked with.

Use Mary Conlin company

I bought my boat in the US and had it trucked to Canada. I used a company call Mary Conlin to take care of all the documentation. They took care of all the required docs and registering in Canada has gone without a hitch at least from the documentation side of things. www.vesseldocumentation.com

trucking to Canada

Rod, May I ask what it cost you to have your boat trucked to Canada. The reason I ask is,there is a gentleman in Canada interested in my Catalina 27TR and is wondering the cost to have it transported to Alberta from Wisconsin. Thank you, Richard
