De-Masted on Lake Michigan

While sailing out on Lake Michigan today, the connector that holds the roller furler to the chain plate broke. I had the bimini up and couldn't get to the deck quick enough to try to get a line to use as a replacement for the front stay. The mast, roller furler and all the sail fell on us. It missed all of us. Thankfully several boats came to help us. We are thankful to be alive. I broke a spreader, the casting at the base of the mast and probably other things I haven't discovered yet. This was a scary experience to say the least. I have a 1988 H23 with a US Spars mast. Can I get a replacement spreader and the casting that is attached to the base of the mast? The casting on the cabin top seems to be OK but I haven't looked at it real close.

I don't have roller furling but I'm trying to make a habit of checking the ring clips on my forestay and shrouds each time I got out. I've seen 'em come loose before and it ain't pretty. I believe you need to contact Julian and USSpars.com

Mast Parts

Lee, Sorry to hear of your mishap. Glad all the people are ok, and you got back in without any other damage. Don't know if you remember seeing my posts and answers about a crack in one of the mast pin mounts on our 23. Got a lot of info on a new mast base. usspars.com and rigrite.com have a lot of info and some parts. Our mast is a z-spar Z-190R. It has the "old" style mast base and mast foot. The base is available through rig-rite as a special order, they quoted me $235. It will use the same mast foot so you won't have to change that out. I did not check out the possibility of swaping both the base and foot. You might check with Julian at us-spars. It could be a less expensive and quicker alternative. Other parts are available. I don't know which spreaders we have, they seem to be listed as a seperate item. Julian or Crazy Dave might know. US-spars have a detailed exploded view of the masts and rig-rite has pictures of individual parts. Check out both web sites and them contact them with your needs. Hope you get back on the water soon. Cotter pins

Lee - Sorry to hear you dismasted. Glad all were safe. Mike - I've been taught that you should only use cotter pins for shrouds and stays, as ring clips can snag on a line and be pulled out quite easily. Something to consider. Ron Mehringer s/v Hydro-Therapy

Lee, contact Julian at

You have a Z spasr mast I will assume. US Spars basically in a Z Spar. Z Spar will no longer come to the US direct. Long story which I will not discuss. Anyway, contact Julian at US Spars and the phone number is 386-462-3760. He is a great fellow to work with and he knows what you will need. Crazy Dave Condon
