I found an oscillating DC fan (for a truck cab, I guess) at the auto store for $10. Its the only one I've found so far. Has anyone found suitable fans, and where and for how much? I need them for the aft cabin in the C-36, and on rare occasions, the main and forward cabins. Thanks, jv

I got the Hella Turbo fans most most marine stores

have them. They are not cheap but they last years and years, probably one of the longest lasting ones on the market, push a fair amount of air and they use very little current. The ones you are talking about are good but the two problems are that they don't last very long and they use alot of current, relatively. Practical Sailor did a report on them a few years back.

Power vs. price

John, like all things in life there are compromises. PROS- Auto/truck fans are readily available and cheap. CONS- They give no thought as to how much power they are using, since they have an unlimited supply. Plus they are noisy and will corrode if exposed to salt water. Hella makes a line of marine fans that are energy efficient, quiet, corrosion resistant and expensive (start at about $60). Check the mail order folks if there isn't a marine store in your area.

Oscillating Fans?

The ones that are sold in the marine stores are noisy. I have been on charter boats with them and even had one installed in my boat and the noise always got to me. It'f the vibration on the bulkhead that makes the noise. So check it out thoroughly. I replaced my noisy one with a Hella fan. It doesn't oscillate, but the fan can be set to any position. Mine was in the salon. A great cabin fan is the folding Coranado (sp?) fan. It runs on 4 batteries (large size) and has variable speeds. It'll run all season on a set of batteries. It can be set to blow directly on you at night and sells for about $20 each.

Hot Wire

We cruise the SW coast of FLorida, Everglades, Keys and use several Hot Wire port fans. We sail most of the year, not just the winter months so our fans are a top priority (second only to mosquito nets). They draw almost no power, even on high. They move a lot of air and are made to fit in port holes. Their number is (conviently on each fan) 888-430-7576, Ext. 2144. Just another bit of info. on these things, if you manage to stick your finger in the blade they stop, it will scare the crap out of you but you'll have no injuries.

Smaller Hella

I installed a couple of the smaller Hella fans on the underside of the side decks and they have worked very well so far. Best thing about them is the low power draw, (~.3amp) and the adjustability of the air flow direction. They are also pretty cheap, less than $20. I believe West Marine may sell the fan now under their brand.

Folding fan

I have no idea of the brand name but I have a folding marine fan (folds up against the mounting surface to be out of the way). It sure pushes a ton of air but it's loud as all get out! I'd try to find one that's quieter. LaDonna

OK, Here's the scoop

Check the related link for the folding portable fan. It's on the West site. It's the same as the Coranado and I just bought one 3 weeks ago. Well worth the money.

Quieter than a kitten...

...I have three of them for a few years. They may need to be replaced every 3-4 years. I forget to turn them off and find it running the next time I go to bed. FWIT, I recommend them. What's nice is that they are portable and can be used anywhere else, such as the galley when cooking or the salon when reading.

Mounting options

The folder looks O.K., but I am looking for one I can permanently mount. Min says it draws 1.2 Amps, which is a ton, but I was thinking of runningit at lower voltage, or putting in a DC chopper for variable speed. It has a mounting foot that is screwed down, and the fan foot slides onto this and has a screw to lock it.

Can't mount them

No, they cannot easily be mounted. And I run them off batteries, so amps are not a problem. 300 hours on the batteries is great, though. I put my weak flashlight batteries in them and they continue to work.

Hella Turbo is the BEST!

The Hella Turbo is really the best 12VDC fan on the market (unless there is something new). The motors are rated at something like 5000 hrs. They are not cheap but they really are good. I have one of the older ones that has been left running for 2-3 months without turning off. The new ones are suppose to be even better. They move a lot of air for DC. If you are at the dock, you can buy inexpensive 110VAC fans at Home Depot, Kmart etc for $7-10. These fans have clips so they can be moved where ever you need them.
