Thinking of relocating to the Dayton, Ohio area this summer. I have an h240 which I would like to leave in the water during the summer months. Does anyone have any suggestions on a lake and marina that would be good to rent a slip and to sail on? Would like to keep it within 1 to 2 hours of the Dayton area. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Lake St Marys

Long long time ago when I was stationed at Wright_Pat the only place we thought of as worth going to was Lake St Marys. Can not remember much about it but that is the first place I would check out. The are other places to take the boat if you want to trailer a few hours like Erie or the land between the lakes down in Kentucky.

Sailing near Dayton

I haven't been to Dayton in many years, but I seem to recall that there are many lakes in the area. Most of the good ones are in state parks, though. Try Ceaser's Creek or Buck Creek state parks... Or, if you just want an afternoon piddling about in the water, there are nice launching facilities at the Dayton Hydrobowl (if you can figure out their schedule). Another source for good info in the topic would be the Hunter dealer in the area - Strictly Sail, in Cincinatti. Their number is (513) 984-1907, or you can check out their web site at http://wl.iglou.com/strsail/wwwhome.html I can't help much with dock space- I don't remember there being any marinas north of Cincinnati. Good luck! --Jon Bastien H23 '2 Sheets to the Wind' (Started its life in Cincinnati!)

Another Place besides Ohio

Brookville Ind. lake have had my H240 there for two years. Kent Harbor 24' Non-power slip is $1450.00 and 26' power slip is $1895.00. Nice lake large. State slips hard to come by (lottery). There are two buoy fields. Check Strictly Sail Web site for for better lakes in the area.

Brookville Lake

At Brookville Lake there is a great variety of options for docks and mourings ($350/year) with 24 hour service. We also have a lot of nice coves for gunkholing. The Brookville Sailing Association is a fun group to get involve with and they have some fun oriented racing evey other week if your interest in that type of thing. The web site is for the club and lot of other good local info is http://home.fuse.net/blsa/BLSA.htm We have been on the lake with our H26 for five years and we really enjoy it a great deal. Rocky Fork Lake

Tom, Been out of town and just saw this. We live in Northern Ky (an hour south of Dayton). East of Dayton, just outside of Hillsboro, OH (Route 50) is Rocky Fork Lake State Park. It's easy to get to although not near an Interstate. This keeps the crowds down (there are no crowds). Active sailing club (Rocky Fork Sailing Club). Slips are available at $225 per season (yes, only $225). I believe there are 80+ boats in the fleet. Good luck! tom myers

Rocky Fork..YES!

Hi Tom, If you relocate then Rocky Fork is the place for you. You can check out the RFSC web-site at http://home.fuse.net/tdp26/rfsc.html The lake is about 6 miles long and 3/4 of a mile wide. It pretty much runs east-west and is fairly deep (20+ feet) for an inland lake. The people are great and the park mgmt loves us sailors (really!). The lake is approx an hour S.E. of Dayton and we have a lot of sailors from there. Our sailing season starts in late march and ends in early November.... and yes, a slip for the entire season is only $225. The place to be is the East Shore Marina which is where all of us derelict sailors are. If you have any questions you can get me direct at svpegasus2@yahoo.com If you think you're going to go there call the Park Office and get your name on the "boat slip waiting list" (make sure you mention that you have a sailboat and you'll [ahem..]somehow end up with a slip) ;-) Steve

Rocky Fork ?

Do the slips have power and water? Is there a pump out station for marine heads? Are there showers and rest rooms? If this is so, this place sounds like a good deal. Thanks might look into a move.

Buck creek State Park

I have been at Buckcreek for seven years and have really enjoyed it. The lake is about 45 mins from Dayton I have sailed most of the other lakes except Rocky Fork which I have heard many good things about, but it is a good bit further away. BC has one very important feature and that is the lake was formed by a earthen dam that and the relativly low laying land around the lake puts the water level at tree top hieght to the south west direction. This is the direction of the wind, more than not. The marina is state run and all in all is pretty good. The people are great we have a small informal club which get together for a variety of activities from "beach parties" to relaxed racing. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, I could go on and on. I am listed in the owner's registry. Eric

Rocky Fork Info for Dan

Hi Dan (and all), There's no water or power at the docks. There is a pump-out station with water faucets nearby... but not too nearby :) There are restrooms and showers at the east shore marina (where most of the sailboats are docked). I understand we have a much longer season than Brookville since Rocky Fork is not a flood control lake so the level stays constant. Our boat goes in in late March and comes out in early November. If you have any questions you can email me direct at svpegasus2@yahoo.com. We now return the rest of you to your regularly scheduled web-site ;-) Steve

Thanks Steve

Same season as you. If fact, some boats stay on the water year round. I was up at the lake on a warm day in Dec. and two sail boats were out. Made me jealous. I am going to anti-freeze the ballest next year and keep her on the water. With the shore power(I hope)and a heater to keep her warm.
