the old, worn line used to lower the center board snapped in my hand the other day. Can I somehow reattch a new line with having the take the boat out of the water? Thanks!

Rod Johnson,

If what you broke was the line in the CB, no.

If you broke the line that is actually attached to the centerboard (29" of 5/16 3-strand Dacron), then no, you can't replace that without hauling the boat. The centerboard must be removed (at least partway out) from the boat to access the knot buried in the CB. If you broke the part that runs through the blocks to raise/lower the board, then yes, the line can be replaced without hauling the boat. This line is 15' of 1/4" 3-strand Dacron line. You could use braided line for either of these lines, I replaced the line in the CB on my boat with double-braid Dacron (before it broke). What year is your boat? The steps to remove the CB from the boat are different for a boat built before 1980 than for a 1980 or newer boat.

daysailerII cb line snapped

Thanks very much, Rod. Mine is a 1975 daysailer II. Is there a way I can tell whether I broke the 29" line which is attached to cb, rather than the part which runs through the blocks? Also, if I must haul it out ( which I should probably do anyway if Isabel is to make her presence felt in these parts (Essex, Ma), is this a job I should tackle myself (spirit is willing, but I'm no mechanical genius)or should I take it to a yard? BTW, do you know of any yards on Cape Ann which might be more tuned to dealing with a Daysailer? Too many questions.... and thanks for any help.

Rod Johnson,

Easy!

Jon, if you snapped the 29" line...it would have come right up out of the top of the cb trunk and be rather obvious. However, if it only pulled out of the cb (unlikely) but still had the knot, it would be pulled all the way up and the tackle used to lower the board would be 2-blocked ie: the blocks touching. If you broke the part running through the blocks, you will see that right away, since the whole works is right at the entrance to the cuddy. I forget, which line broke? The line to pull the board up, or the line to pull it down? The cable that is attached to the CB to pull it up could have come loose from the board, if so..the cable will be loose with no tension on it. If it broke inside the CB trunk, it would have pulled right out of the hole in the trunk and be laying in the cuddy. I have included a photo of what my cb lines look like with the board pulled most of the way up. If yours doesn't look like this, let me know.

Thanks, Rod. It's the line to lower the cb

Hi Rod, thanks for that picture. (btw, I don't have that nice block arrangement you have). It is the line to lower the cb which snapped, and it snapped somewhere inside the cb truck. The boat is now safe and sound on it's trailer in my driveway. I'm hoping that I can do the repair here. Do you think this is possible? Thanks again!
