Does anyone fly Day Shapes on the Great Lakes? ie. Flying a Cone when motorsailing. Is this just an International water rule, or are the Great Lakes exempt, or is it just not enforced? Thanks

Its international rule. I guess not many places/sailors does it. At least not from my sailing ground.

Sailed Great Lakes for over 50 years. Never saw anyone fly a day shape - other than some commercial craft. Never the less I carry one for daytime anchoring.....

International and Inland, but if you're under 12 meters in length you're not required to carry them. I've never seen one either on a private yacht, even the big ones.

I've seen a couple, but they were on Canadian flagged boats enroute to Mexico, never on a boat from "in country" so to speak.

Just bought an Anchor shape. While I've never seen one here... If I am anchored in an unmarked area and someone runs into me... Well, I figure this is cheap insurance and would then put the burden of avoidance on the the guy that is probably flying on his super powered outboard.

I fly a steaming cone routinely when motor sailing. I also fly a day beacon when anchored outside an Anchorage. Helps give me peace of mind on the Chesapeake when it's busy and we are on the hook lunching and swimming. It does, however require the other boaters to realize what these are. At the very least, it makes us stand out. The best part....no electrical wires to run!
