Day at the Lake

First real boat work of the year. Brought the lifelines home for measurement and replacement. Also removed a stanchion. Many winters ago I broke one with a stupidly installed cover. When I had it welded I forgot to tell them about the angle and they made it 90 degrees to the base. It stuck out and would catch on slip pilings. And I tightened the shaft lock screws but could not find my stainless safety wire. I uncovered the boat enough to remove the handrails. Went to the car to find I had forgotten my cordless drill.

Why do gremlins visit the boat when it is just sitting peacefully on the cradle? In November, fresh off the truck from Florida, the bilge pump worked. Now it doesn't. And there is some water in the engine pan mixed with some oil. In November it was clean?!

Some pictures: 1) hard to get to the lighthouse, 2) Ladylove in her winter coat, 3) some people do not worry about bubblers, a liveaboard.

Ed: I just ordered new life lines (went with vinyl covered) from Seco South. The total price was $375. This included 5 new Johnson Marine over-center pelican hooks. We have a reversed boarding gate (stern pulpit to aft most stanchion).

I sent them my old ones and had the new ones back in about 10-14 working days.

We may lay claim to easier winters than you, but I got to say, all the pictures I see of the great lakes makes me feel it must be a wonderful place to sail. So many pretty places and so many destinations.

In time for Valentines day we gave Kinyonga a new dodger. I willl take some better pictures and post them seperately.

Nice John, but I couldn't do that. To have a dodger that nice it can't be foldable. And I keep mine in the locker in case it rains when I am staying on the boat, a rare occurrence. Wish I knew the mileage from Huron to Tampa. But safe to say the dodger saw less than 1/4 of that. Maybe I hide it because it is so ugly.

Steve, I forgot you have a gate. That would explain the cost difference(see my e-mail).

For some reason your shallow draft H37C in a cradle looked very different to me. I thought the difference was striking but after comparing with mine it does not look that much different than the deep draft out of the water. Must be that first cup of joe has not kicked in.

I am about to have a dodger built for Midnight Sun an was interested in yours. In the picture that shows the boom, it looks much shorter than mine. Is it standard? How high is the dodger off the cabin top? If you have more photos I would lone to see them. My email is RBSails@aol.com.

Mark, it actually is very noticeable. Right after my boat was put in the yard it was right next to a fin keel H37C. Pretty dramatic. That boat was gone, found out Kirk just moved to the Chesapeake, Rock Hall I think, and took the boat.

Blaise, one of the reasons that John's dodger looks so good is because of the size. And it can be big because his traveler is on the roof.

Blaise - I do believe I read somewhere on this site that the correct height for a dodger is 5 ft. from the cockpit sole. What that is above the coachroof I don't know. I retrofitted a dodger from another 37C and then had to raise the gooseneck about 9 inches. Good thing my main was short on the hoist. Don't recall how high the dodger is now and it will be a couple of months before I visit my baby.

I have emailed you. The boom looks short because is is pushed off to port while the dodger is being worked on.

I had a new mainsail year before last and the standard dimensions pertained, so I assume that boom length, goose neck position etc are all standard.

Surprised they don't used jack stands up where you are. That is maybe why Mark thinks his boat looks different from yours. Mark, yours looks like mine on the hard (see you on the creek soon, I HOPE).

Emil, they really are different. As I wrote above, when a fin keel sits right beside a shoal keel it is very noticeable. There are a lot of boats in my marina on cradles. Possibly because the marina is a Hunter dealer and we just keep the cradles that the boats are shipped on.
