Dear Forum Readers - What's up with my Day 2. Twice in the past 3 years I have had "Mast Collapse" on CC Bay. Am I just not tightening my shrouds enough or am I exposing this great boat to too heavy water and wind conditions for its own good. I yesterday avoided a likely 3rd collapse after dicovering a badly frayed shroud. The 2 collapses have resulted in replaced mast stems and heels. What was the thinking that led to the "tabernacle"? Is it possible to abandon this mast feature and adopt some other? Would other Oday Daysailers suffer the same fate if exposed to the conditions of CC Bay or is my II just unique in taking these hits. I came to this boat from a Laser 2 which also had problems with CC Bay turbulence. Please advise. Do I have to relocate in order to enjoy this boat? Frustrated and returning to the boat yard for more repairs. john montemerlo

Day 2 Mast

I don't know your bay, as I'm in Minnesota, but I dont' take my DSII out in more than 10-12 wind speed. My shrouds are kept somewhat loose for give, maybe yours are too tight (it's also completely possible I have no idea here). If you're getting heavy gusts (maybe just more than 16 or so, that maybe enough to bend your mast). Just a guess here. I just met a guy who sailed a DSII out in your area for 10 years and he had no problem with this he mentioned. Good luck!

mast collapse

Not sure what you mean by mast collapse. Is it crushing the tabernacle straight down? Is it breaking a shroud, and falling sideways? Is it bending above the hounds where the shrouds attach part way up the mast? If its the first, you shrouds are too tight or you don't have a compression post. If the second, the shrouds are likley the original size 3/32. Go up to 1/8 or 3/16 although the latter is getting pretty big. If its the last, you need to reef your sail, let out your traveller if you have one, or spill more wind by letting out the mainsheet. When tuning your shrouds the leeward shroud should be just slack (not sloppy) on a beam reach.

fix boat, stay on Cape

My mastfell twice when i first got the boat (careless mooring in Saratoga Lake boat got washed up on shore in a storm) I can't remember exactly why it fell but probably due to excessive rocking on the beach by the waves. My advice get new shrouds from D&R Marine maybe a new forstay, make sure your tabernacles are strong, tune up the shrouds pretty tight and stay out of big waves. If you reef and sail sensibly it shouldn't fail. Try sailing Wellfleet or Provincetown Harbors, I've had great times there and I plan on trying to sail Pleasant Bay and Barnstable Harbor in August this year with my 17 ft o'day, (don't leave the CAPE! I thinks its a great place for a small day sailer)

Day 2 Mast Advice

Dear Piasano - Thanks for your suggestions. My problem sounds like yours. Mast fall down while moored . I might consider going to a slightly bigger diameter shroud - 1/8th or more. I hope to get up to Wellfleet harbor but being an Eastham resident I can't moor there. Good luck on Pleasant Bay. Let me know what your thoughts are on it after the season. johnm

Day 2 Mast Man

Dear Roger - Thanks for the suggestions especially about shroud size. I will consider going up to a 1/8th diameter. I guess my problem has been more mast falldown than collapse. These have only happened when the boat is moored not underway. In one case a good semaratins lashed my mast and boom to the deck of the boat and I discovered the problem days later. This time I think the problem was the integrity of the shroud itself. I will try your suggestions. johnm

Mast 2 Man

Dear Mike - Thanks for your suggestions especially regarding wind speed. I come home to Conn every seek and the boat sits unattended in the bay. Several times last month severe sind and rsulting swells caused my mast fall down. I think I am going to larger shrouds. johnm
