I bought a Walker Bay 8'dinghy to get to and from shore when we're anchored. I really need some leads on a good, reasonably priced davit system to hoist the dinghy up at the stern of our Mac 26X. Even better would be some pictures of a well constructed davit system that somebody fabricated themselves. My biggest problem is getting it out of the water above the Mac 26's motor and far enough out so that the rudders can be raised and lowered. The dinghy only weighs 71 lbs., so I'm thinking I can mount something off of the aft safety rails. Has anybody ever tried putting davits on a Mac 26?

Here is a link

I am not sure if the layout and size of your boat would realistically permit for a davit system but here is a link to a guy's project where he illustrates step-by-step cold-mold technique for homemade wood davits. http://members.aol.com/Destinyprojects/CS27_Imp_wooddavits.html

Check with McGreagor

It could be very dangerous to add that kind of weight that high above the waterline on a M26. I doubt if the manufacturer would condone that modification. I recall reading about a M26 that rolled over in calm water with no wind when it was overloaded with passengers on the July 4th weekend. The ballast tank was empty at the time. It should not be used without water in the ballast tank with a boat up on davits. Even with the tank full you trim would be severely affected.

You only draw about 8''

so just beach the boat when going ashore or anchor in ankle deep water.

It seems like over kill..

You wouldn't buy a Toyota Yaris to tow an eight horse horse trailer and that's kind of what it would look like. Davits are ok over about 32 feet depending on the vessel. Either buy a roll up inflatable or just tow the Walker Bay. There is a lot of load exerted on davits both up and down and side to side and it's significantly more than the 73lbs of the WB. Based on what I've seen the push pit on a Mac certainly can't handle those types of loads with stock davits so you're looking at custom davits and custom reinforcements of deck and push pit at a minimum. Tow it!

I tow an 11 foot inflatable behind my Mac 26S

It's kind of big compared to the sailboat, but the kids absolutely love it. The only problems I've had towing it have been in waves (it ends up jerking forwards and back as it rides up and down a wave separate from the sailboat. Otherwise, it rides along very nicely when sailing or motoring. I don't notice any real drag from it at all. I think davits would be major overkill (and probably wouldn't work as well as you would hope) on this size boat.
