I am searching for a cheap yet clean davit system for a 10' inflatable on my 323 - the inflating, deflating and stowing is taking its toll... Have any other 323 or 343 owners found an economical davit system that you are happy with?
I got mine from Oceanmarine. When it comes to davits get strong, well made ones. This is not a place to skimp.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beneteau393/beneteau393 : Beneteau393 Group
my dock neighbor put a set of Garhauer heavy-duty davits on his boat to carry a ten foot RIB, but that boat is a Pearson 42. Your boat will look stern-heavy with a ten footer hanging from davits. You can't just tow it? A friend tows his RIB dink with his Catalina 30 all the time, with the engine attached, in the ocean, too.
You're right. i do not want to skimp on quality, but trying to weigh the benefits of the fold up davits versus the hoisting system you have on your boat. I have a friend with a 32' Nonsuch who have a flat wooden swimstep and the fold up system seems to work great. The concern I have with the 323 is the swim step is quite a bit lower and curves (i.e. only about 4' of flat area to mount the davit system.I turn my attention away from the fold up systems for now.
My suggestion would be to try some tip-up chocks that mount to the transom of the 323 that latch to brackets glued to the side of the inflatableCombine that with one of the forespar hoists to lift the motor from the dinghy to the outboard bracket on the stern rail. That keeps the inflatable low on the stern, and allows you to safely stow the motor. The hoist is also useful for safely lifting heavier items aboard.
My 39 foot boat has a big, strong radar arch. I sling my 9'6" Zodiac from the arch and it works fine. I never leave the outboard on while on the arch. The dink does not look out of perspective in relation to the length of the boat. In my mind, a 10 foot dink will somewhat dwarf your boat. The davits would have to be built like a Russian tank to support a 10 foot dink. If you also wish to leave your outboard on your dink, I would be concerned that the weight would result in the whole thing crashing down. Maybe a bigger boat or a smaller dink....
