This is an update on Hawaii Dan’s bent strut. After much hand wringing and brainstorming I decided I could pull the strut while in the water. I hired my spousal unit to climb down and aft. She was able to loosen the nuts on the bolts, and as she pushed them out she replaced them with bolts from inside with rubber washers to stem the tide. After all the bolts were replaced from inside out, I broke the seal from underwater on scuba and removed the strut with little water getting in the boat. When I pulled the strut the cuttless bearing stayed on the shaft. I had to cut that off with a hacksaw, again under water. The strut is bent and has more than a few cracks. It’s bronze and so is the shaft. My question to all who helped me out before is. 1. Can it be straightened and repaired (the cracks) brazing/welding 2. If not where can I get a new one 3. If I can’t get a new bronze one can I use SS? Will I have a dissimilar metal problem? The strut and shaft are removable while in the water. If you have scuba gear and someone double jointed, not claustrophobic and willing to bend like a pretzel. Thanks Hawaii Dan S/V Illiusions

The company that makes (or made) struts for your vintage boat probably is: Southeastern Foundries Corporation 2706 Oakland Avenue Greensboro, NC 27403 tel: 336-299-7211 At least they were making Hunters struts in 1990. Prop shaft: Recommend the shaft is checked for being true before it's installed. For what it's worth, a stainless shaft is stiffer than a bronze one so there should be less vibration everything else being the same.

Dan - On my Hunter 30 1977 a few years ago I was able to buy a new strut from Hunter Marine. It is bronze. I replaced the bronze shaft with a SS unit. I am also experiencing electolysis problems. Henry.
