hello to all, we have a 240 that has enjoyed 4 winters in the keys and the shallows have taken their toll on our centerboard. While snorkeling at Molasses Reef this winter we noticed that our centerboard is 3 or 4 inches shorter than it could be. I've thought about laying up a new nose but wanted to look about for an abandoned or damaged Hunter and simply replace the board. I would appreciate any leads. We have an outfitters shop up in the mountains and I have laid up kevlar grunch plates on the bow and stern of our rental canoes and I padded out the bottom of my rudder last fall but this might require a mold to get the right shape. any and all suggestions would be appreciated. thanks much.

The 240 is not a race horse, and the few inches is probably not noticable. I would make sure the bottom of the board is sealed well. Maybe rebuild it a bit or just glass over the end. It would also help to figure out what you have been hitting. I watch my depth guage and start pulling the board up at 6 feet of water.

things we learn over time
One of our 1st visits to the keys was down on Cudjoe Key and we learned just how shallow is is there. I would have to motor 2 miles just to get to 5 feet of water and constantly had to watch for channels to run in. Up off Key Largo I smacked a rock in 10 heet of water one afternoon and quickly noted it on my gps, it was on a heading I had run frequently but it caught me off guard. Oh well, such is the challenge of Hawks Channel. Looking at the centerboard on the trailer, I see that I've got severe delamination 1/3 to 1/2 half the length. Has anyone raised a Hunter 240 without a lift? It appears that 6 inches vertical lift would allow me to slip the board out. I've read some interesting theories but I haven't found anyone who actually figured out a ginpole arrangement. I'm a half a days ride to a marina with a lift, so I'm looking for any experienced methods. Thanks

The H240 Centerboard is constructed like the H26/260 board. I think you'll need much more room than 6 inches. Check the pictures for CB line replacement at this link: http://kb.sailboatowners.com/brand?post=1139 Maybe you can remove it in the water with a diver's assistance?

He's thinking that if you just raised the back of the boat, you could slide the board out horizontally. the problem is that the bolt that the braket that holds the board in comes out vertically, which means you need a whole board-width of space below the board, plus alittle. Can you back it into a garage? If you have faith in the construction of your garage (IMHO, probably only if you have a large steel I-beam in the ceiling) You could rig a block and tackle. you only need to lif the boat an inch or two, using a floor jack, take out the slack, tie it off WELL, pull the trailer out from under it. I have done this in my garage for a 24' powerboat, when the trailer was eneded for another boat temporarily. I used two 10,000 lb lifting straps. and my dad has done it with his 35' twin engine monster in the old fctory building that it is stored in, to paint the bottom. He used a 6:1 chainfall and 4 straps.

If you lost part of your centerboard, then replace with a new one. The construction of it is fiberglass over a foam core. Once the foam has been imersed in water, it will weaken the foam in light of the fact you have lost part of your centerboar. IF you are planning to repair, then this is possible but the added weight of all that metal and/or fiberglass will cause it extremley difficult to pull it up with the cascade/center board line on top of the deck. I tried, been there and done it, threw it away and ordered a new one. Check with How chandlrey if they can get you one.

That's what I was looking for. Someone who has tried this before. Thanks much for the advice. I found a posting from someone who had his boat rolled by hurricane Wilma and was looking to restore it. I'm still trying to find him to see if he abandoned his boat. I'll try Hunter also but with the boat being discontinued I'm not holding out much luck. I looked at the new 25' in Key Largo this winter and the hulls are totally different in appearance.
