I am going to replace the filter element in a Dahl 101 fuel filter on my Catalina 30. I would like to hear from anyone who has done this about the easiest and least messy way to replace the filter element. Thanks

I just did this last week for the first time on my cat 30. The book recomends you empty the fuel from the bowl and take off the clamp on the top of the filter. If your boat is anything like mine, its a pain. The filter case is in two parts, the top(also mount) and the bowl. The clamp holds the two parts together and is hard to use with only 2 hands.Put a oilsorb under the filter and loosen the clamp untill the bottom is able to be removed(try to hold it upright). The paper element can be replaced then. The big gasket that comes with it is recessed inside(where you cant find it) the top. I recommend if you can uninstall the whole filter do so. Dahl maks a great filter and you will need to clean the whole filter in a parts cleaner, then replace the gasket and put the filter back together then reinstall it. Look over my response to another post in this forum for bleeding tips. good luck, good sailing
