unknown 28' unknown sunset beach,
i bought a 28' sailboat that was abandond at a storage facility. the former owner sanded the entire hull, numbers and all then vanished. the make and model are unknown. no one at the boat yard knows what it is. can some one help me to identify what it is? i can e-mail photos. it looks almost like a catalina. also where can i get plans for building a sailboat trailer. i've searched the e-net without success. this is my first restore if ony of you guys have experience with that i would truly appreciate any advice.

First of all what manner of title did you get?

Was it just a bill of sale from the auctioneer? You may have to go to the state and have them assign a new number. The state can then issue you a title. As to restoration there is much experience here but we have to know what you are looking for in terms of advise. Perhaps the storage operators can tell you the name and last known address of the owner.

If you post a picture here one of these old salts will certainly ID it..

What state are you in. Not as in confusion or frustration. There are several Sunset Beaches. If it is Ca it can be a nightmare dealing with the DMV. I finally went to AAA where with just an affidavit a new number was assigned. Aside from weighing the trailer the whole process took less than 15 min. Through the DMV I was looking at months. Good luck and patience, Frank

hull id number

If you look on the stern you may be able to find the hull id# with this we may be able to identify your boat too.

The tips you got are good. As for the trailer

I designed and built a trailer that was totally hot dipped galvanized for a 26' Thunderbird Sloop back in 1971. I still have it with a different Thunderbird sitting on it. It has a long tongue and except for being a little heavy (1650#) it tows beautifully. It has been up and down the west coast twice and cross country three times. If I had to do it again however I wouldn't do it. I have too much money and time invested in it. I would suggest instead that you buy a cheap car trailer, and just weld 4 poppits with pads and a bow brace on it.
