Hi Guys , I need to replace my cutles bearing this year. And I was thinking of replacing my three blade prop with atwo blade prop from CDI my shaft is all painted and the shaft nut covered with paint . If the yard was to do the job They told me that they would just cut the old shaft off and replace from the trans back to the prop and the job would cost around $850 bucks. If they are going to cut the prop off and buy new I thought I could do the same . And maybe get lucky and remove some of the old parts.where can I get parts from I am in NJ . P/s I would pay the 850 If I could get the guys to do the job . J Olson

Start here..

If the bearing hasn't been replaced in a long time the shaft is most likely worn also. You can still reuse your old prop. Why are you going away from a 3 bladed? A 2 blade will have significant differences from your 3 blade....vibration, prop-walk, noise, etc...

newprop

I live far from my boat(190 miles) and I was thinking I could come up with all the parts new in the box and just cut all the old parts off in minaml time and replace them .I tryed removeing my prop nut and It would not come off. its painted on I tryed WD40 and burnt the paint off with atourch and still It would not move.I think I will get it off in time but time is money I guess I could cut the shaft and then take the prop home and work on the bench and If It dose not come off buy a new one in the spring. I am limited to the amount of tools and materials I can stuff in one truck for atrip to the lake. And if I foget some thing I would have a better chance of getting the missing part or tool in the desart.I have never changed anty of these parts but I think Its going to be a big fight.I was thinking that maybe I could cut the shaft off at the trans and slide prop and shaft out together then have the key cut back in the shaft and replace it. I think that my shaft is to long its out off the strut about 33/4" and the plat on the trans is about 21/4 and the prop is about 13/4 from the bottom of the boat.My shaft dose not look like Its worn down there is still rubber in the bearing but It moves side to side and up and down about 1/16 " So guys what do you think . The snow could start flying in the next few weeks and that will not make it anty easer. Thanks John

When you cut the shaft cut it between the strut and where it enters the boat. Then you can pull the prop and half the shaft out one direction(towards the rudder) and the coupling and the rest of the shaft out from the inside of the boat. Take the parts home or to your local prop shop and let them do the rest(they can check the pitch and balance the prop too) You have to make up a tool to press the cutlass out. There's a page on the Cat 30 website that shows how to do it. In the Spring; change out the cutlass, install the shaft, assemble the flange and prop. With a little luck, away you go. Look at this link...
