I posted a message about rebuilding the head here http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=113005

What is the best way to cut the hose to length? For rigid pvc I have always just used my chop saw with fast, clean results, wasn't sure if there was a better way to cut the hose?

For the stupid head trick. I noticed on our new boat, that the sink in the head drains through the thru-hull intake for the head itself. I found if I shut the intake
seacock off, and run the fresh water into the sink, I can use that fresh water to flush the head, bypassing using sea water! Probably go through fresh water too fast to use it full time, but it was something I found out when I winterized the lines. If nothing else, it would be an easy way to flush the sanitation hoses

Now got to remove the head, rebuild it, buy another $300 rebuild gasket kit, re-engineer the system according to the previous thread.

But my main question is how to get a nice good clean cut on the new hose

Thanks
Paul

That's great

Many folks MAKE a modification to do just that. But you don't have to use all your fresh water to flush all the time, just at the end of the cruise for the last flush to clean the saltwater out of the intake hose, bowl nozzles and pump lines and to the holding tank.

Simple, you're way ahead of the game.

Cool. I wasn't planning on using it all the time. I just happend to notice when I ran the water in the sink, then pumped the head the water came out..Then a bulb went off in my head..well that makes sense!

Pretty cool!

Serrated knife is a good choice to cut sanitation hose

A $2 "ginsu" knife works great!

Congratulations on discovering my favorite "stupid head trick" all by yourself! A customer put me onto it in 1992...and I then learned that several boat builders use one thru-hull for both the head intake and head sink drain to eliminate one hole in the boat AND save 'em the cost of a thru-hull and seacock.

Use sea water to flush the toilet (contrary to popular belief it doesn't make a bit of difference in the holding tank)...then, last thing before the boat will sit, after you've closed the thru-hull, fill the sink with clean fresh water...flush the toilet...rinsing all the sea water out of the entire system before it has a chance to sit, stagnate and stink. Follow that with a cupful of distilled white vinegar down the sink and flushed ALL the way out of the toilet and through the system to prevent sea water mineral buildup in the hoses.
