One of the first alterations I did to Christmas after a year of sailing was cutting the table down in length. I removed 7" from each end, total of 14" which still retained the drawers on each end. Re-veneering the ends is fairly simple. One drawer needed about 2" taken off it's length.
Many of these tables are different in design. What do you have? The centerline is nice underway(as we were in photo) for feeding some crew, at times at anchor, I wish it would go away. My son and daughter on the starboard side with friend Abey to port, they are enjoying soup as we sail downwind in a good breeze but flatish seas. Fiddles not placed.
This is still fine for 4 and we often crowd several more at anchor as the seating is comfortable when you pull the settees out a few inches.
The shorter table opens up the settees at each end. The area by the fireplace is nicer for two to sit. The shorter table on the aft side frees up space around the galley and nav station. The original was enormous.
