Here are the lates pictures of the re-repairs on MY GIRL. It has been a long slow process of reading, doing, tearing out or grinding off or recutting the first (or sometimes second) attempt, redoing etc. etc. After several days of heavy rains I can see that i still have a significant leak from the forward stay chainplate. I have begun to reinstall the teak. I have finished repairing and painting the rotted areas of the deck at the forward tabernacle, the shroud chainplates, and of course the mast area. I have the bulkheads ready to install once i get that pesky last leak dried in. then i can focus on getting the accessories installed. That is the wiring, trim, sink, head, lights, cabin liner, etc. Then turn my attention to the mast and the lines. Then splash! :D
How long will it take? I have learned that i have no idea.

thanks guys, the help from you folks has been extremely valuable. I don't think there is any way to have done what i have done from books alone. I will be glad when my questions are more focused on sailing that repair!

Compared to previous years, the sailing in my area this year has really stunk. We're either getting too much wind on some days, or not enough wind on others, and then there has been the constant rain. I sailed out to the bay last Tuesday for the first time this year, and anchored in a cove in an island about two miles West of Bristol RI. The night was cool for sleeping on board and Penny and I slept great. I think that we probably would have visited another cove and stayed in that area another day, except that I heard that there was rain in the forecast for that night, so we shoved off early and sailed back to Dighton. We ran into some heavy fog, but the winds were beautiful. It's always great to sail the same water that Capt. Nathaniel Herreshoff once sailed. We made it to the Brightman Street Drawbridge on time to have them open it for us, but little did we know that the construction crews working on the new drawbridge had the channel completely blocked off with barges and cranes and they were going to be working there for four hours. So, I had them open the old drawbridge and we went in and anchored in between the two bridges. We lucked out though. We only had to wait about 45 minutes. They opened up an "L" shaped area between the barges for us to maneuver through, and we were able to get by there with the help of the Fall River Harbor master escorting us. That nice fellow who was operating the old drawbridge on Tuesday never even mentioned that there was a scheduled closing of the channel for Wednesday at 10:00 AM when he gave us an open on that day. I don't wish him any hard luck but I hope that an elephant from a circus comes along and steps on his friggin' head.:cussing: I have an old Standard Horizon Voyager VHF radio that I bought in 1987 and it has everything including scanning, intercom, PA, and Marine Weather. So I have to assume some of the blame for not monitoring 09, 13, 16, and 22. Even so, going in and anchoring in between the two bridges was a wise decision on my part. If I had to do it over again, I'd do it the very same way.

altogether it sounds like you had an interesting time. it looks like when you are out sailing, that your schedule has to be very flexible. We are lucky to have the sail club here to learn the ropes. although the limited area we have makes it less interesting. My goal is, after a couple of years of lake sailing, to begin to trailor around to different areas. Maybe even the gulf coast!

I trailer-sailed for about eight years and it's great because you can save a lot of time by trailering to the areas that have interesting places to visit. We sailed to Martha's Vineyard about four years in a row by trailering to Mattapoisett MA, and sailing across Buzzard's Bay. We could make over there in one day. I never bought a mooring or a slip. We anchored, everywhere we went and I still do. The State of RI has State Guest Moorings in certain areas of Jamestown, Prudence Is. and a few other places, but I never use them. I let the larger boats use them. I want to be anchored in shallow water, only because I can. I plan on making another trip out to the bay again in a day or two. Maybe I'll go for two days this time.

When I was a young Captain in the USAF, stationed in beautiful okinawa, we could rent sailboats from the base marina at tori station (worth a google to research tori beach, battle of okinawa). The beautiful little 18 foot catalinas were supplied with a small outboard engine. We could sail to one mile out, and five miles north, or south of the marina. The Island of Okinawa is the jewel of the pacific. The water was clear to 60 feet. Surrounded by coral reef, there was beauty beyond imagination just a foot below the ocean's surface. Weather was perfect most of the year. And I have never gotten over how great it was to have a day off, carry a picnic basket to the boat, and cast off lines and let the wind move us across the waves. I still remember the name of the two boats we had. one was wind demon, the othe was spirit angel. My dream is to get my boat back into the ocean.
Best of sailing Joe

It sounds like a beautiful sailing area Keith. I hope to be back out on the bay this week and spend a couple of days in my favorite coves. I also look forward to baking up a freshly caught Blue Fish on board, or maybe sneak a few Cherry Stones to make my favorite recipe of Clams Casino.

Phil,
How about getting the recipe section back up again?
Joe
Ahoy? :D
