From wikipedia:
"A stave bearing is a simple journal bearing where a shaft rotates in a bearing housing. The tradename "Cutless" is used for these rubber bearings and this name has also, along with its misspelling 'Cutlass', become a generic term for them."

The name Cutless Bearing came from the manufacturer marketing the fact that their bearing "Cut Less" than their competitor's, i.e. didn't score the shaft as much. Somehow it's slowly becoming Cutlass bearing. But it's like if I see someone talking about Port and Starbored. I just get this itchy twitchy need to correct them and explain the history, origin and proper spelling of this common nautical term. I try to suppress it. I really really do. But I just can't help myself. Plus it's a really slow day at the office and I'm bored.
