Cutless - right. Cutlass - not so right

From wikipedia:

"A stave bearing is a simple journal bearing where a shaft rotates in a bearing housing. The tradename "Cutless" is used for these rubber bearings and this name has also, along with its misspelling 'Cutlass', become a generic term for them."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stave_bearing

The name Cutless Bearing came from the manufacturer marketing the fact that their bearing "Cut Less" than their competitor's, i.e. didn't score the shaft as much. Somehow it's slowly becoming Cutlass bearing. But it's like if I see someone talking about Port and Starbored. I just get this itchy twitchy need to correct them and explain the history, origin and proper spelling of this common nautical term. I try to suppress it. I really really do. But I just can't help myself. Plus it's a really slow day at the office and I'm bored. :)

I get some comments about this on my web site and have researched it to death. Including speaking with the company the OWNS the brand name Cutless®.

Cutless® is a registered trademark of Duramax Marine® LLC. It is a trademarked brand name, not a commonly accepted generic term.

Companies, such as Vetus, use the accepted generic term "cutlass". Vetus is one of the marine industries largest world wide suppliers of stave, sleeve or cutlass bearings but NOT Cutless bearings because they would then need to be selling a Durmax product not a Vetus product...

http://www.vetus-shop.com/vetus-cutlass-bearing-id-25mm-od-40mm-brass-p-321.html

Some companies use the terms stave or sleeve bearing because they can not use the trademarked brand name Cutless®. Anyone using the term Cutless® needs to be referring to Duramax Marine's product Cutless®. I can not use the branded term Cutless® on my web site unless I am specifically referring to a Duramax product. I have discussed this with Duramax.

DURAMAX MARINE OWNS THE WORD CUTLESS and it is a registered & trademarked brand name...........

Like it or not for many, many, many years now, at least 40, the word cutlass has been an industry accepted generic term for a stave or sleeve bearing....

In short if you are referring to a Duramax bearing then it is a Cutless®. If you are referring to a Morse, Buck Algonquin, Vetus or any other bearing it is a stave, sleeve or cutlass bearing...

I was on my cell phone on the train... Not to worry the day job is safe....as long as they haven't asked be to leave.

But I have to do something to entertain myself if I can't go sailing. N

Merry Christmas to all...
