Hi All - Does anyone have any temporary fixes to a cutlass bearing on my Catalian 30? My marina is putting it in this week and I didn't have time to replace the bearing ---I think its worn as there is some play in the shaft. Does anyone know of any products out there that I could apply to extend the life some on this one until I get to my next haul-out maybe in a year. Thanks - a long shot but thought to check around. No, YOU BETTER

pay them to replace it. It is 2 hours of their time at $90 per hour and $65 for part. For under $300 you can get it fixed. If you don't and it is bad you can add another $300 for the hual out. Don't be cheap and get it fixed. Waffle!

Fix the bearing

I've done it twice myself with and without the homemade tool. It was difficult both times, but the cutlass bearing itself is not expensive. I don't know if your yard has the professional tool which allows removal without taking the shaft out, but my yard charges a lot more than $500. I think it was $1500. the last time I checked. They cut the shaft in two and replace it. If you attempt this yourself check the archives for details. I have read of some yards renting the pro tool out. If you have excessive play I would fix it someway before they put your boat in.

Thanks

I have some play....as a perfectionist, I like everything to standard. I think though I am going to leave this until the next haul-out. My wife and I are expecting our 2nd baby this July and our Son is 14 months old...that said, I don't see us racking up many hours on the boat over the next few years :)

1/16 inch run out

Don't sweat the run out if it is 1/16 inch or less. You have a 1 Inch diameter shaft. It may seem a little loose but up to 1/16 is ok before replacement. You can check it with a dial indicator or steel cliper.

I feel a little better

now that I see the price at your yard. I just paid $900 to have mine replaced - 11 hours labor and almost nothing for the part. Of course the estimate was $600 so I'm still smarting over the bill.

I am launching on Friday, my yard is kind enough to replace on a short notice for $250.00
