Interested in discussing the tool I see everyone using to perform a cutlass bearing replacement without shaft removal as well reestablishing contact with a gentleman who fabricated one . He was at Cape Marina in Cape Canaveral Florida and reached out to me but I have lost his contact info. My schedule to bottom paint has moved up to January and after watching these videos multiple times I am going to do it given the surveyors recommendation to replace at the next bottom paint. Is anyone familiar with this tool, can it be rented? Thanks in advance, this procedure looks so simple but we all know how that usually turns out...lmao

most big yards have Cutless bearing replacement tools, shims for your particular size shaft, and and a mechanic who will pull your old bearing and put in new . google that and you'll see why making your own is time consuming but easy work if you have access to a machine shop . size your p shaft and , double check the size and then order the correct c bearing yourself. (order 2, you'll need another one eventually. and you will save on shipping costs.) it takes maybe an hour with the right tool to replace the c bearing.. the professional c- bearing puller tools are about $400. manufacturing your own tool is possible but a lot of work and you need access to a machine shop. (google home made Cutless bearing tool to get an idea how much work it is to make your own.) you should plan to take off the prop yourself to save time for the mechanic if you don't want to pay the yard to do that. if you have a specialty prop like a flexofold you may need a specialty prop puller -- throw away another couple hundred on that unless you can borrow that too.

Thanks Mitch, by chance I do have the Flex o Fold and researching, studying the process, tools and options for the cutlass bearing. If I can get my hands on the device I will definitely give it a DIY. Gonna do bottom paint at the same time.

I would try getting a person that comes to the yard and use this special tool and they a
good job and less than making or buying the tool.
Your location should have way more people that provide this service than most other
yards.
I did my own but I was pulling the shaft to change my PSS rubber booth and so did not need the tool and did it with info from Mainsail web site on how to do it.
A few years back I saw a guy come to yard with the tool and replace the bearing
and think he charged $100.00 for about a hour of labor.
