Cutlass bearing. Hi Sailors, The cutlass bearing on my boat is located at the end of the shaft tube just ahead of the propeller. The bearing is held in place in the shaft tube by means of 2 small set screws which are tightened with an Allen wrench. One of these set screws( or the sleeve holding it) is stripped. What can be done to repair this? Where can parts be obtained? Thanks, Frank Weeks

A Heli-coil

is the usual repair for such a problem. You can but a kit at any good auto supply store. Or for about the price of the kit you can hire a mechanic to install one of the many that came in his kit.

heli-coil insert will rust

Tap it out to the next bigger size. Or drill a new hole and tap it to the original size.

My 2 cents

Drill out the set screw. Use a bit that is smaller than OD of the set screw, but large enough to drill out the interior of the set screw. You want to break away enough of the set screw so that what is left will collapse leaving the original threads in the strut. If that fails enlarge the holes in the strut to the next size and tap appropriately for a larger size set screw.

bad threads

There is a tool called a Easy Out they sell a hole at Sears. How to use them #1 pick a drill that just a little smaller then the bad screw, drill as far as you can be careful not to brake the (use cutting oil,or wd40.#3 Then with the wright size tool for the hole (note the tools are in set ) put in the hole turn it Counter clock wise only ,slow but steady this will work Remember counter clock wise.

Easy Out hint

don't break the Easy Out because they are very hard and can't be drilled through easily if at all.

Punch the loose set scew THOUGH into the bearing .

Consider to drill and tap a new setscrew hole near the one thats buggered. with a hacksaw blade cut into the bearing case along the long axis of the bearing, then simply use a punch and punch the buggered set screw INTO the old bearing to collapse it and make its extraction easier .... do this also into the 'good' setscrew on the other side. Then simply drill and tap a new setscrew in the housing. The set screws are there for an emergency and if the bearing and housing become too hot. The bearing is held in place by the 'intereference fit' .... bearing OD is larger than the housing ID.
