Well, when I did it...
I had to drop the rudder (which needed work anyway)...the rudder part was easy! Inserted some dish soap on the bronze shaft and pulled IT, broke the end of the old shaft, so I now had to replace the shaft (with stainless). I then took a hack saw blade and cut out the old bearing. Putting in the new bearing was a real pain, but I eventually managed to get new bearing in place. Managed to insert the shaft with little difficulty (again, dish soap helps). I've heard of people simply disconnecting the strut, and doing it this way, so as not having to drop the rudder. Also, you can try to freeze the new bearing (so it contracts) so it will fit better in the strut(where it will expand in place). Needless to say, I hope I never have to do this again. Good luck!
