Cutlass bearing

I think i need to replace the Cutlass bearing on my vega. Seems to
be about 5mm of movement from side to side - too much? Any hints on
how I go about it. Also, the shaft has an oil seal, looks like a
brass sheath around the shaft with a nipple on top into which goes a
small pipe filled with oil. Seems to be drinking quite a lot of oil -
is this normal? Still seems quite watertight.

Thanks in advance

Hi Paddy,
I have a similar problem on my boat. I also have the oil lubricating system and I am considering reverting back to the old greasing method.

My cutlass bearing is showing signs of wear and should be
replaced, but my yard is unable to find a source for this particular
bearing. I searched this list but am now more confused. I know the
yard was looking for the "funny shaped bronze hub" with the nylon
insert in place, but is it possible to replace the insert without
replacing the "f.s.b.h."? Is there a source for the completed part?
I posted a picture of the bearing in Tern's portfolio, though I
assume that it is original to the Vega and the same as everyone else's.

Hi Craig

I make the stern bearings and they are in stock. Contact me off group - steve@...

You can also machine the stern bearing holder to accept a standard cutlass bearing. The ID must be to accept a 25mm shaft.

Thanks Steve, It looks like I will be putting together a decent order
in a bit; rudder bearing, cutlass bearing, window gaskets . . . Craig

I need to replace the cutlass bearing but I'm not clear on exactly what part I need to locate. The bearing is an odd shaped bronze hub which has a nylon/rubber sleeve pressed into it. The shaft rotates in the sleeve and the hub is held in place with a compression ring. Do I need to locate another bronze hub/nylon assembly or do I replace the nylon sleeve only? If I can replace the only the sleeve is this something that needs special equipment or a press, or can I do it in the yard? I assume this hub is the original on the Vega but the engine was changed out for a MD7A and the shaft is 1". The bearings the yard personnel showed me were simple straight bronze pipes containing the nylon bearing and did not resemble mine. I've posted a photo in Tern's album. When I hauled last I didn't replace it then because no one knew where to find the complete assembly. Thanks

Hi

The bearing is tufnol but I now make them from a special oil lubricated plastic with hardly any absorbtion. Cost is £15 inc carrige.

It will be some months before I am able to haul and replace the cutlass bearing, but when I do I'm wondering what type of bearing is at the inboard end of the shaft. The Tern has a Dripless shaft seal which probably is due for replacement. http://www.shaftseal.com/categories I've never removed the Dripless seal, don't care to while in the water, and don't know what to expect to find when I haul out. Is there a bearing there that I may need to replace? The Dripless seal allows water to circulate around the shaft and stuffing box, which I assume is still there but without the flax stuffing. I guess the point of my question is . . . Is there another bearing on the inboard end of the shaft that I should have on hand should it need replacing?
Also, I'm not clear on how the cutlass bearing is replaced. The yard wanted to replace the bronze hub with the plastic bearing as one single piece, but did not know where to locate it. From reading past posts I understand that I can remove the hub and cut the old plastic sleeve out with a hack saw blade and press in the new one, but what holds it there? It seems that it would spin out of the hub as the shaft spins. Thanks

Hi Craig

The plastic bearing is just cut out and a new one pressed in. They are a compressed fit so need to be hit witha rubber mallet or similar. I have the bearings in stock if needed. Made from a special lubricated plastic with almost no absorbtion (0.004%)

With a dripless seal I take it you do not have a combi gearbox?

Hi Steve;
how are you- long time no see....
I just changed the plastic bearing and also the stuffing box. That should be ok for the next 3 to 5 years.
Though I have 2 stuffing boxes (meaning I just take one out and put the spare in), but now I need the seal rings and the bush for the one I just took out.
According to the Albin 0-11 / 0-21 parts catalog I need seal ring
Nr. 25, parts No 52802-156, and the bush , No. 24, parts No 49192.
Do you have these parts? No hurry, like I wrote, I most likely wont need these parts very soon.....

Hi Steve, No, I don't have the combi anymore. The original engine was replaced with a Volvo and I think it's a Warner transmission. What I don't know is if there is a bearing at the inboard end of the shaft tube or not.
I will order a cutlass bearing shortly, thanks.
