I have a 1989 Hunter 27 with a one cylinder Yanmar. the cutlass bearing needs to be replaced. Is it better to remove the cutlass or pull the coulpling on the prop shaft.and then remove the shaft . any input would be greatly appreceated.

cutlass bearing

Just replaced the cutlass bearing in '83 27H w/ 1GM Yanmar. 1) Removed strut that houses the bearing. 2) decoupled the engine. each time strut removed the engine should be realigned, when back in water. 3) once strut is off its easy to press out old and press in new bearing. You can even have a machine shop do it at a small cost. 4) If you can get at the strut fasteners, its not a bad job. 5) Its not that much to have the yard do the job if you dont have the time... thats what I did ! Good Luck, Mark Slifko Almost Paradise

CUTLASS BEARING R/R

I RECENTLY CHANGED MINE. I PULLED THE PROP, THEN THE SIX SCREWS TO THE STRUT THAT HOUSES THE BEARING. SLIDE IT OUT AND HAVE A MACHINE SHOP OF YOUR CHOICE DRIVE THE OLD OUT AND PUT THE NEW IN FOR AROUND 35 BUCKS. REINSTALL AND WATCH ALIGNMENT. TAKES A SECOND PERSON INSIDE Q - BERTH TO HOLD A WRENCH. GOOD LUCK!
