I think your referring to the stuffing box change out. The cutlass bearing is near the prop.
I have a PSS shaft seal. You will need about a minimum of somewhere around 6 " or less overall when compressed. You should have some room from the forward end of the seal collar to the back side of the coupler flange for installation.
note the outside diameter of your stern tube. This will be the size hose to order. You should have a 1" shaft, but measure it anyway.
I recently sent an email to PSS as my buddy just ordered one. Maybe this info will also be useful.
email: I do something in addition for the shaftseal. I am a mechanical designer and over the years have never "trusted" set screw holding. I've seen them fail.
When I am ready to make final assembly, I take an exact
measurement from the hub on my coupler flange to the PSS collar in the
"relaxed or neutel" position. With this measurement, I add the compression
setting and use this added length to make my "safety collar".
I then take a 1" PVC heavy wall pipe (i.e. my 1" shaft) and cut it in the
exact length I've measured (including compression). I then cut the pipe in
half lengthwise. I now have two halves that are sandwhiched around the shaft between the collar and flange hub. This should be the exact setting compressed and you will have the added security of no collar slippage. You will need to be out of the water for this installation.
With this exact set point for the compression. I then take two hose
clamps to hold the PVC pipe halves together. West Marine has a line of 316 s.s. hose clamps which are made well for bildge environment applications.
