You may6 want to go into the archives and review comments and questions about shoal and deep draft 28.5's, which were made with a 4' draft and a 5'-2" draft. I have had a deep draft 28.5 in the Chesapeake bay for 19 seasons and would never trade it for any shoal draft boat. However for those who need to get in and out of shallower marinas and anchorages, I can see where some folks would prefer the 4' keel. That said, if you actually cut of a foot of the deep keel, you will loose so much weight, Id be concerned with the safety and the ability of the boat to carry her designed sail area, as well as the negative effect on the resale value once you make such a modification. The 4' shoal draft keel has greater length and slightly MORE weight than the deep keel.
