custom pedestal guard

I have a 1991 hunter 28 that I want to mount a pedestal guard on. I have not been able to locate anything close to the Yacht Specialities guard hunter used( except on mine). It bolts directly to the pedestal base. I don't want to go with the guard feet as they will go through the aft cabin ceiling. This is probably why Hunter used the Y/S Pedetal guard. Question is has anyone used a custom marine fabricator to make anything stainless for their boat and had good results with the fabricator?

Mine too.

Eric: I have a 1985 H'31. The brokerage that I purchased mine from made a custom guard. The made flanges that bolt to pedestal so they did not go through the cockpit sole. I have no idea what this cost because it was 16 years ago.

Had a local (Norfolk)fabricator make a pedestal guard for our Hunter 31 last year from 1" dia. s/s, 54" tall and 9" between legs. Its attached directly to the deck using Edson feet ordered from West Marine. I fabricated the standoff from 1/2' Starboard which surrounds the compass and provides support at the top. (Also made a small shelf which sits about 8" from the top for my gps to sit on. I'll take a photo of the installation tomorrow and post it.

Pedestal Guard idea

The suggestion of making a custom pedestal guard is a great idea. I've been struggling with finding a way to add a big Garmin 225 GPS to the pedestal of my Hunter '31. Now I'm thinking that a custom job that would attach to the existing guard might be a solution. Another possibility would be to add a secondary stainless post right behind the current guard and attach the gps to the new piece. It's hard to come up with an elegent yet simple solution that would support the 225, hide and protect the wires, and not look silly.

Michael: Do you have a 9" or 11" mount on your H'31. I think if you have the wider mount and could use pods for the rest of your instruments you would be fine. You could drill the guard and run the wires inside the tube. If the tubes are mounted to the pedestal instead of going to the cockpit sole everything would be clean. You may want to consider an offset guard instead of a straight one too.

Stevie Deeeee update

After doing even more research into this conundrum, and recognizing that Merriman Yacht Specialties has been gone a long time, I thought I should see what Edson offers. Duh! Of course, they have a swivel arm and pod that might fit the Garmin 225 GPS and would connect into the existing pedestal. Now I just have to see if there is room in one of the pedestal tubes to run the two (2) antennae wires and power connection. I've included a photo of the existing pedestal/pod system. (Ignore that freighter running me over.)

Freighter aside.

Michael: I think you may have posted this picture before! I thought that you had been run down a couple of times by freighters.........<g> Anyway. There is also a offset binical that you can purchase. It make the total height about another 8-10" higher, but the area where it offsets would make a great place for the Garmin to be mounted.

As promised here's a couple of photos of our recently installed pedestal guard. Nothing fancy - it holds a couple of drink cans, a GPS and the Edson attachment accessories for a cockpit table.

Hi Eric, I installed a pedestal guard on our...

1989 H28 that I purchased from WM. I used SS screws rather than through bolts to attached the base to the cockpit sole rather than drill a head liner access hole. The screws held just fine because the bulk of the weight is supported by the pedestal bracket. Terry
