I will be storing my sailboat outside with a Tarp covering. I don't have a place to store all the cabin cushions so I was hoping to leave them aboard. I was thinking that if I put them in large trash bags and duct tape them close that it would keep the moisture out. How have others handled this dillema? I also live in the Northeast.

If it were my boat I would leave a space heater ..

on at a low setting to help keep the boat dry. I would leave the cushions on the boat but place them on edge to allow good circulation. I would not seal them in plastic bags. Terry

Me too

We typically remove all the cushions from the boat, however this year we feel it would be easier to keep them on the boat. We are getting shrink-wraped and the interior stays quite dry....and very warm when the sun is out no matter what the temp is outside (greenhouse effect). We are going to stand them up, seperated and on a plastic crate-like piece to allow air flow. Think it will be ok. Greg

Stored on Board

I've been standing them freestanding in the V-berth on edge separated by 4-5 inches and similarly in the quarete berth for 20 years. No mildew or moisture or smell problems. I cover the back half of the boat from the spray hood over the cockpit and compass binacle to the stern and edges of the coamings with a medium heavy Home Depot silver plasticized tarp to keep the snow off the drains open and protect the cockpit and companionway.

Storage of Cushions

I think anytime you seal cushions you risk the danger of trapping moisture inside the seal. If you can ensure they stay dry, I'd store them on edge and ensure plenty of ventilation around all surfaces.

I leave them on board

I get shrink wrapped and leave the cushions on board, exposed, standing on edge. I don't wrapp them either. Never had a problem in 10 years and 3 boats.

The winter time humidity levels are very low

If you maintain good ventilation and good air circulation in the boat there will be no problem. If you wrap them do it with bed sheets to keep dust of but to allow ventilation.

Don't seal them in a plastic bag

as they will get moldy. If you leave them uncovered through the summer you may leave them uncovered through the winter. A boat closed to rain or snow does not allow for much ventilaton. In order to prevent mold I would suggest that if you have access to electric power to get a dehumidifier. It dries up the air and produces heat. You can route a discharge hose to the bilge or to a designated through the hull by removing the hose. We keep a dehumidifier on our boat all year round here in Florida and the boat's cabin is always dry and mold free. We have no musty odors and the potato chips don't get stale. It discharges into the bilge area. When we sail we store it under the V-berth and for long trips we take it out and leave it behind. Just another idea.
