Curtain alternative

We went with the Zarcor Peek-a-boo shades. They look great and filter UV rays. Lets the light in (no noticable difference when closed) with maximum privacy. They will custom make them, even for production boats (they send you patterns and you match them up with your portlights to make sure they are right) and they install in a snap! John provided great customer service and has alot of other great products. The shades don't have that "homey" look but they work great!

Stu, could you assist?

Stu, my wife and I also looked at the prices and decided to try to make our own. Could you offer any advice or resource information? We are not really good at sewing, but think it is worth a try. Appreciate it, John, Cat30 hull # 593. Erie, Pa.

Replacement Shades - Try Redi-Shades

We were desperate to replace our stained and deteriorating curtains on our Cat-38. The track mounting clips were rusting and the little slides were beyond annoying to try to remove and repalce. Not to mention, way too spendy for a few sqaure feet of fabric. I ran across Redi-Shades in a local home improvement store. These are a horizontally pleated 'temporary' shade made of a plasticized paper product. I removed the old tracks and mounting clips and used double-faced tape to temporarily mount the shades and test the fit. After a year of the temporary fix I am going to make it permanent. I will be using brass blind fasteners and composite batts to attach the shades across the top and a batt across the bottom that attaches with a small velcro stip in the center. The blind fasteners will allow easy replacement of the shades. When I finally get around to the project, I will post pictures of the process and the materials list that I end up with. If you have any immediate questions, email me at cat38skip@excite.com .

On our C25

it did not have curtains when we bought her. I used to work on RV's during my college years vacations and I used what was put in the slide in campers. Basically it is a brass curtain rod with the snap in clips at the end. I put one on the top and one on the bottom and had the curtains sewed locally with a hem top and bottom. Each port has two pieces so we can open them and the top bracket faces up and the bottom down. Once you snap in the top, you pull the bottom rod over the bottom brackets and the tension from the fabric holds it in place. Only a couple of things to watch...keeping the curtains parallel to the window, and don't drill too far into the cabin top. I used short brass screws through a thick nylon washer to ensure I did not have the screw tips breaking through the side. We bought the fabric locally, gave the templates to a local tailor, and she sewed them up for us. With 4 ports in the C-25, I had 8 panels and it came out great. BTW: There are two sizes of rods and mounting brackets. On one type the bracket sticks out about 1 1/2" and can get in the way. They also make one that has 3/4" brackets and that is what I used. Got them at either Bed, Bath and beyond, or Linen's and Things. Sorry, just can't remember.

When I said we , I was wrong, of course,

because Cory made them. She kept the sliders from the original tracks, bought material we both liked, and then sewed them and sewed the sliders into the new curtains, using the old ones as templates. I do the engine maintenance, oil changes, rigging, other BMW stuff. She sews. It has hems and folds and pleats and things I can't even begin to describe, but they're nice.
