Hi, I lhave a rusty boat trailer that I would like to spruce up. Is it possible to paint over the rust? I have heard there is some primer that can be used over the rust and then you paint on top of the primer. Anybody have any ideas? thanks, Lori

sandblast

If it's very rusty, especially around weld joints, you should sandblast first to see how much metal is left. Reweld as necessary, then apply primer, then topcoat. If you just paint over the rust, you could be hiding a hole or a broken weld. And some Mac trailers were not welded properly at the factory so the risk is increased.

its not a macgregor trailer

Hi, I dont have any equipment to sandblast and the trailer is not a macgregor and is for a light weight boat. The welds look fine and only parts are rusted (eg fenders). Cant I just paint over it??? Lori

no short cut

At the very least I would suggest pulling out your hammer, a metal chisel ( or something with a pointy end)and lastly, and most importantly, a pair of safety goggles and just get at it. Don't short change yourself.

Wire brush and primer

Lori, Use a wire brush to get rid of the rust. Either a hand brush and or a wire brush on a drill. Use an oil based primer or rust converter and then put a good enamel paint on top once the rust is cleaned off and metal primed. Or ask a local body shop what to use. be careful with the wire brush on the drill as it will eat up your hands and fingers. Let the primer dry well before painting. Steve P.

I just did a light sand / scrape and painted with ospho. a rust stabilizer. then brushed some rustoleum. I've had good luck with ospho on automotive projects. http://www.ospho.com/directions.htm anyone try naval jelly or electrolisis ??? http://www.instructables.com/id/E17UQMY28PEQ6T2A5Z/?ALLSTEPS
