Does anybody have drawings or plans for a cuddy cabin hatch cover that I could use to make my own?

Dave

PS: mine is a 1972 Daysailer I

I have the one for the DS II (also fits DS III) but that won't really help for your DS I. The DS I did not have a plywood cover to close off the cuddy available as an option, so you may have to just design your own based on measurements of your boat.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping someone else had already done the design, but I guess I'll have to use my Engineering degree to design my own:redface:

Did they actually change the cuddy opening when they did the DSII? we had teak plywood cuddy doors on our DSII (or III) that were lockable....we never tried to sleep up there....Rudy might be able to provide (D & R Marine, Assonet, Mass....I may have misspelled.....

The DS I was completely open, no aft bulkhead on the cuddy. Seats were separate from the deck. The DS II and DS III had a molded-in cockpit and the cuddy gained an aft bulkhead, allowing the boat to be "self-rescuing" aka: usually able to be righted by the crew after a capsize (a hopefully rare event!) without filling up with as much water as the DS I would. The most recent version of the Day Sailer, the DS IV (Sunfish-Laser built from 1992-95 and Cape Cod Shipbuilding built from 1995-present) is even more self-rescuing since the cuddy can be totally sealed up. That does limit it's usefulness for easy-access storage though, especially on the SLI-built boats that only had a small, 12"x18" hatch!

The early years of the DS II had a smaller cuddy opening that had an optional vinyl-coated canvas cover, around 1973 the opening was enlarged and the plywood cover was offered.

I have learned since my original post that my O'Day is a daysailer II not the I I had thought it was. Thanks for the info, but my question remains the same. Does anyone have plans for the door to the cuddy?

D&R Marine sells the covers for the DSII. I have an original set I could trace. I also have a cover I made for when I sail events like the Tx200 that allow me to keep the cover in place while sailing. The top third is hinged so I can access the cuddy without taking off the whole hatch cover. If interested I can send pictures of that cover.

Thanks for the picts. I'll see if I can persuade my grandson to go into the cuddy while I hold a piece of plywood against the opening for him to trace on. If that doesn't work I'll be back. Thanks again for all of the input from all of you. It helps to know there are sailors out there who are interested in helping.
