Barnett Butterfly (maybe) ??? Lake of the Forest
I am having a hard time finding any information online about the Cub Scow 12 sailboat. I'm pretty sure that is the type of boat I have and I would love ANY information anyone can give me. Any and all information welcome! :)

"Cub" refers to the 16-foot X-Boat scow. It's what inland juniors sail before they get hands on the big boats. Not familiar with a "Cub Scow 12." The Butterfly is usually considered the smallest scow. It's 12 feet.

The 'mother of all sailing scow websites' is www.ilya.org The "cub scow" is not listed.

Melges Boatworks of Zenda Wisconsin is still the primary builder of most 'scows'.... you might want to give them a call. The world famous sailor Buddy Melges usually answers the phone and he as well as most of his staff will talk as long as you want about scows, etc.

some things identifying a Butterfly- two piece mast fairly far forward, Large main, no jib. Little wood hand rails in foot well, below deck level. Swing-up rudder with a round hinge that is about the size of a hockey puck. My rudder was flat aluminum, with no foil at all. Super simple main sheet, that has a couple small plastic pulleys that look to cheap to be on a boat. Sheet metal shroud adjusters that are not threaded but rather you just change the pin location. And of course a butterfly on the sail.

A company in Osseo Minnesota made a Butterfly knock off called the Cub Scow. It was 12 ft long. The hull was from a splash mold of a Butterfly. The deck was different. The first two pictures are of a cub scow.

At some point the company sold the design to Hydrostream Boats, who produced it under the model name FOX. The last picture is of a Hydrostream Fox. Note everything is the same but the logo on the sail and "Hydrostream" decal on the deck. The Osseo company is no longer in business. Hydrostream still is but no longer makes sailboats.

Cub Boat vs Cub Scow

Here is a little bit more history on the name "Cub". The Inland Lake Yacthing Association or IYLA has been active in the mid-west for over 100 years. Back in the 1930's the IYLA wanted to develop a boat specifically for training kids. Johnson Boat Works of White Bear Lake, MN put forward a 16 ft, sloop rigged, hard chined design which they referred to as a "Cub boat". The IYLA adopted the design and designated it as class X. The boats are great sailboats, gentle and forgiving yet fast and responsive. Today the boats are generally referred to as X boats but when I was growing up in the '70's the terms X boat and Cub boat were used interchangably.

The Osseo Boat company used the name Cub Scow for their Butterfly clone. I suspect they chose Cub because it would strike a chord with sailors familiar with the IYLA Cub boat name. Alot of boat companies made clones of the Barnet Butterfly. Copyright laws were not as strong as now and making a splash mold from a Butterfly was common. The Nordex Bat is one example. Here is a picture. It also has similarities to yours but is not it. Perhaps Southern Yatchs is the manufacturer.
