Cruising to New Orleans

I'd like to hear from anyone who had made the trip from the Texas Coast to New Orleans. I have hesitations running "the Ditch" due to its heavy barge traffic and it reputation for shoaling, but coming from the west, the offshore route looks like a long way around. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Cruising the Gulf ICW

I've been there done that in the reverse direction from Mobile Bay to Clear Lake, TX in my Catalina 30. A real learning experience and one I'd do again except take more time. Many people strongly recommended against going outside due to the countless oil rigs (some sawed off at the waterline by storms and impossible to see at night even on radar) and also because of the threat of bad weather during frontal passages. We encountered two fronts in just a week's time. I'm glad we stayed inside.I could write a book but there are already some out there, notably Claiborn's and Young's.
