Cruising RPM and speed of O34 and O35

I have seen information regarding the cruising RPM for the Universal M25XP. As an owner of an O35, I thought it would be interesting to see what others have experienced in this regard, not only the cruising RPM but also the speed which results. Our cruising rpm is about 2200, which give us about 5 knots, maybe a fraction more. The RPM seems to be on the low side - however, the tach was checked for accuracy during the survey in 2001. The Universal specs for this engine show a normal range of 2100 - 2600, with a max of 3200, but it seems that for a boat this size, the cruising speed is on the low side. The prop is a 2-blade fixed, and has markings that show "16RH9" which I believe indicates that it is a 16 inch diameter right hand prop with a 9 inch pitch.Anyone else have similar or different numbers for these models of O'Day?Ed

RPM's

Hi Ed:I have an 034 with the M25 and the same prop. I found that mine squats a little at 5 kts at 2200rpm, but boosted up to 2400-2500rpms, it moves through it and get's on up to 6.5 kts. Kind of like passing through the sound barrier!! I run mine consistantly at those rpm's and have never had any problems with it.

Size does matter

Hi Ed, I have a oday 35 with the same engine and prop and find that your stats do concur. Unfortunatly the problem is that the engines are too small, all sail boats should have a minimum of 1hp. per foot of boat. Most people that have repowered there boats have used atleast 40hp to 50hp in boats from 35 to 45 feet.
