Cruising Mains
Like all things associated with our boats, choosing a sail involves tradeoffs. Price and performance are probably the most important ones. As a cruiser, you probably should be looking at a 6.5 oz Dacron sail, two reefs points, at least one full length batten at the top. Most mains are now made loose-footed, but I think the decision to go loose footed or shelf footed in pretty subjective. Beyond these issues, you want a sail maker that will come to your boat to take specific measurements and who has a rep for making quality products and standing by them, if need be. On the other hand, if you don't plan to keep your boat long, don't want to put much money into sails, and aren't too particular about performance, just about any loft here or abroad, can make you a decent sail. If you were to go this route, the primary concern I would have would be making sure the the sail fits and what happens if it does not.
