Looking for other couples to meet up with for short cruises-- also any ideas for new destinations-marinas or on the hook-- bored with Westbrook,Greenport,Sag Any Oday rendevous around? Ideas?

I cruise in the western half of the sound
I keep my O'Day 25 in Groton and cruise the western side of the sound to Watch Hill. I would like to get to Block Island this season and expand my cruising from there. I have heard that Block Island is not a bad trip as long as the weather is good, but wonder what kind of weekend it would be should a storm blow in on Sunday when I would need to get home. I would like to meet other like minded souls to cruise and get together for afternoon cocktails in the sun. Look forward to other responses. Ed

Ed My wife and I have a 30 Oday and want to go to Block.We've gone to New London and Mystic from Branford with friends--looking to plan new destinations and new friends as our friends only want to go to the same places. We enjoy anchoring out--they don't.Hope to hear from you. P.S.We also enjoy cocktails in the sun.

Sounds Like a Plan
Larry-- I have a couple of friends that enjoy sailing and also anchoring out. We could meet up and try for a weekend to Block when the weather gets warmer. My email address is edmundjgubbins@aol.com. Keep that on file and contact me after June 1 so we can plan to meet. It would be fun to get a couple of boats together for a weekend. Have you gone to Shelter Island? That could be a trip that would be just about in the middle for the both of us. Block is DEFINATELY on the agenda for the summer!! Block Island/Long Island Cruise
Sound like a party, so I thought I'd chime in! For the past two years I've kept my O'Day 23 in Mystic, CT (and will be there again this season). I'm thinking this is the year to sail to Block Island. I know my O'Day is up for the challenge, I just hope my skills are, too! Perhaps traveling in company would lend a bit of confidence.... Let me know if your plans materialize. Is everyone busy prepping for a new sailing season? -SRF

I used to cruise to Block and Newport, and Cuttyhunk, and the Vineyard from Mystic in my Catalina 25. I can't think of any reason why your 23 would be a concern unless it is in terrible condition. Make sure you have good navigation skills as the fog is often thick. As for anchoring out it is the only way to go!!! Fresh air always blowing through the forward hatch as the boat faces into the wind...peace and quiet compared to docks. Have a good trip and if you want company some time look me up on Windward Jan Oday 35 out of Noank. One other bit of advice...go on a weekday, weekends are a complete zoo at block. Best regards, dave

Anchoring Out
I have heard that there is a place to anchor in the Great Salt Pond at Block, but the bottom does not give a good hold for the anchor. Has anyone else experienced this? What size anchor should I anticipate using for an O'Day 25? I have an old Danforth anchor now and am looking for a new one that is rated for a larger boat to ensure a good hold. I figure I could deploy both anchors if the wind begins to blow. I am glad that more people are joining in for a trip to Block!! I will save this thread and contact all when the season gets closer...... I can't wait for the warm weather! Larry-- are you watching for more company? Ed

Holding at Salt Pond
When you enter the harbor the anchorage is on the port side and about a quarter mile down the channel. Get into about 7 to 8 feet of water and you can see the bottom. Drop your anchor in a sandy spot so you know its' not in the weeds. Let out 7 to 1 scope and back down the boat to ensure a good hold. I have anchored there for years. Once in a 50 knot wind when a flash storm blew through and held ok. The problem is on weekends it is so crowded people are on 2 to 1 scope and there is no way they will hold in more than a light breeze. Go on a weekday and you will be fine, avoid weekends like the new SAR disease. dave
