Hello all! I decided to take my father on a cruise from my home port of Chas. to Wilmington. We're going to make this a long weekend. Does anyone have any experience(s) with this route? Fastest route? Wilmington ancorages? Etc... anything you got I'll take. Many thanks.

Great Trip

Kinda long trip for a weekend depending on what boat you have. Are you going up the waterway or ocean? I used to live on a boat at Wrightsville Beach which is adjacent to Wilmington. Lots of great places to go. My suggestion - get a slip at Seapath Marina or Wrightsville Marina. They're both on the waterway at the beach and located within walking distance to many restaurants, etc. If you're coming in from the ocean the inlet is right there at the beach. The other option is to go up the Cape Fear River and tie up in downtown Wilmington - also a great choice for food/sites/shopping. Again, the waterway and ocean meet at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and you can take it up to Wilmington. BUT BEWARE - the Cape Fear is to be respected, especially on a falling tide. Ask on the radio or on land at Southport before you head up/down the river. It can really be scary out there at the wrong time. Let me know if you want to know more specifics.

thanks Don, need more info!

Don, thanks for your reply. I need some specifics about the approach. I have a H34 that draws 5.5 ft. Is the best appoarch to Wilmington going around Cape Fear to the North or go to Wrightsville Beach? Is the channel well marked? Are there many shoals--that "scary part" that you mentioned in the previous message? What's the estimated time you would give me for the arrival? Thanks in advance for your time and advice! Scott

Info

I too am planning this trip and was wondering the same things - how did it go, shoals, good marinas, time involved, etc...
