Hi,

Is it possible to fit a pole at the bow of my Beneteau 411 that will keep a cruising chute clear of the anchor rollers etc. ? Appears difficult with raised chain locker door on deck and double rollers etc ?

Any advise appreciated.

Forespar has one

I just returned from the Miami boat show where I saw a removeable "sprit" made by Forespar that fits in your second bow roller. The aft end requires mounting a plate behind your anchor locker. You would have to remove the sprit to get your anchor locker open.

I'm looking at the same situation with my 323! I thought about trying to run a short sprit at an angle so that I could still open the anchor locker. Even one of the banana shaped sprits that is available doesn't look like it would work.

The other idea I had was to use a conventional spinnaker pole, using an attachment point as low on the mast as I could get it. That way one could even swing the tack to windward. It might be a little tricky to tack the pole to the opposite side of the forestay though.

A B323 also, I run the tack line down behind the aft side of the anchor roller, down, up in front of it , then back over the top to deck or cockpit.

I do the same thing as you with my gennaker tack. It works, but I really would like to get the tack farther forward by about a foot ot 18 inches.

I have fitted a small bow sprit on to my 411 in England. The sprit is stainless steel and i have driven a piece of hardwood into it. It has two holes through which I pass an Anchor retaining pin for location, The sprit is aprox 3inches in diameter and can slide forward into position on the spare Port hand roller and the pin replaced. I have still to fit a stay I think it is called a babystay down onto the bow to counter any bending pressure, I fitted a block on a spring to a u-bolt and a nylon plug onto the end so as to be more friendly when using locks or moorings. I replace the sprit to the back position in the locker when in the Marina as they charge by the half metre.
My first effort bent when we were caught by a strong gust during a trial run using a thicker gauge but smaller diameter pole hense the bigger pole and baby-stay unfortunately I have no photos to hand but this pole takes the block forward of the anchor by about 15 inches and more important clear of the genoa when you play off the tack.

We have a SELDEN one fitted to our 323 .. I made a bracket that clamps to the side of the bow roller .. The pole sits to the side of the chain locker so this can be opened with the pole back .. Sticks out about 2ft from the front of the bow roller and we fly a cruising chute from it .. Took a bit of working out but it does finish on the centre line even though it goes out at an angle .. Uses a deck eye to hold the aft end in place ..
