XYL and I are thinking about sailing/cruising the Florida waters during the months of October through April. Our boat draws 3'9" and displaces 7100#'s with a balast of 3000#'s. Her LWL is 28'. Tnx up front for any direction this matter. Frank.

Get an up to date ICW guide

There are some thin places in there. Don't wait too late to start south, some years cold weather comes early. Plan to spend most of your time on the hook. Overnight slip fees make motels look attractive.

Frank, Had friends leave the upper bay for

points south in late October and got caught in rough cold weather and spent the winter in Hampton, Va You might want to contact them at: waldenrigging@earthelink.net Their names are Dobbs and Suzanne. They sailed from the upper bay to marathon four times. ( a 27 ft O'Day I think.)

did it from Late Sept to Mid Nov

We hit Fayettville on Halloween (to give you an indication of time). It was warm the whole trip. Rained once (while in the Dismal Swamp) in two months. We started in Cleveland Ohio and went to Miami arriving mid November. We drew 6 feet, hit logs in the swamp and that was it. No other problems.

The hurricane season...

last all the way until November. It peaks between September and October for the east coast. Usually the first strong cold front to make it down into FL marks the end of the season. Equip your boat for some cold weather sailing and come on down. Go down to the Keys and don;t forget the west coast (Gulf of Mexico). Any draft under 6 ft is considered adequate for the region.

run late

We left annapolis the weekend after the sailboat show and headed down to miami via the ditch to beaufort (ended up being cape fear river) off shore to miami - don't leave to early as the hurricane season can last a while - if i can sell my house i plan to leave after hurricane season and head to the islands until spring and then up the east coast - i also plan to head south after the boat show as i really want to make sure hurricane season is over. if you make miami look us up at rickenbacker marina. enjoy and have fun chuck and soulmates

Hurricanes

Hi Guys: Appreciate all the good information. Thanks. It is especially refreshing not to have the "greater than thou’s”, sharing all their experiences with either scorn, sarcasm, or superiority attitudes. Hey, could this be what we all have been seeking; genuine and enjoyable camaraderie? Anyhow, as to the hurricane season: our putting the boat on the hard from June/July to Sept/Oct. is not only due to the high probability of hurricane damage, but because of the oppressive heat and humidity (personal position). With the appreciably diminished winds during the summer we find this time is good for addressing the shore side responsibilities. Unfortunately, leaving in October is not negotiable due to the eminent cold weather arriving sooner rather than later. PS Just got off 20 meters with a resident of Ponta Garde. His report is that the town is very nice and quiet, but still much to be done after the hurricane damage of 2 years ago. Frank
