Creeping throttle lever on H31

I have just discovered that my throttle lever slowly creeps downward while motoring. Engine RPM's gradually decrease while under power. You can just about see it move. I have owned this boat for three years and this never occurred until recently. Where is the friction adjustment for the throttle cable and how difficult is it to remedy? I have the 2GM20F Yanmar engine.

Options are available.

Bob: The first thing to try (and it's free) is to try adjusting the set screw under the compass. This puts pressure on the cable on the throttle handle. Sometimes you cannot put enough pressure on the cable to make this work. Others have replaced this little set screw with one you can get at a home improvement center/hardware store. The next option is a J clamp. I have found that this works fine and only costs about $20. The clamp really works

that Steve writes about. Had the same problem on my previous 84 H31. Just order the clamp and install it. Best $20 you will ever spend.

Throttle fix

We use a fix that is even less expensive. Wet paper towels jammed between the lever and the binnacle solves the problem just fine.

Had the same problem!!!

Bob, I had the same problem on my 1990 Vision 32. I searched everywhere trying to figure out the problem. I even broke and had to repair a linkage mounted to my 3GM30F. After fighting the problem for over two months ( It really Sucks having to continually keep my hand on the throttle pushing it up to 28 rpm's), I finally went to the forum for help. I did what Steve Dion recommended. I removed the Compass (again). Found the screw and tightened it. I read in the forum not to over do it. So it did take two compass removals to find just the right tightness. Hope a screw driver is all you need!!! Good Luck!!! Daddy's Dream

Easy Fix

Had the same problem with our Hunter 340 two years ago. Moved the throttle clamp from it's original position near the engine

Darcy, that is where they belong.

Darcy: Actually the instructions indicate that the clamp should be placed as close as possible to the throttle lever as possible. On these older pedestals that is not very close to the lever at all.

Creeping Throttle

Bob: I don't believe there is a built in friction device for you throttle BUT I had the same problem

There is an adjustment screw!

Dick: There is an adjustment screw under the compass. As I remember, it is a nylon screw. You need a long (very long) and thin screw driver. When you tighten it down (assuming that it is not worn out) it works for a few weeks and then needs to be done again. The screw can be replace from a general hardware store (from all of those little boxes full of screws and fasteners). The "J" clamp works just fine (as you know). I originally had one of those cable crushers on the cable and do not think that they are very good. This is where everyone gets the idea that they will destroy your cable.

Guess I need a picture

I have the same problem on my 1981 H33. Took the compass off the Edson pedistal last week and searched for the nylon screw mentioned in the posts. I couldn't find it. Is this screw close to the throttle adjuster entry, or way down below? Thanks. Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty

ah ha! There is a difference!

Ken: I do not know about the Edson Pedestal, what this discussion has been about is the Merriman Y/S. You may not have one. You can just purchase the 'J' clamp and it should work. Check out the Photo Forum and you will see how the 'J' clamp works and is installed.

I was/am having the same problem. I was able to help the problem a bit by tightening the cable U bolts down. It's not optimal (the throttle is real tight) so I'm planning on replacing all of the cables. dora@scottcarpenter.net
