Creaking companion way steps on Oceanis 37: access void above engine?

The steps down from the cockpit to the saloon creak on our Oceanis 37.
They appear a little loose on the starboard side, but there are no visible fixings. I suspect the screw have worked loose, and these screws are located in a void above the engine. But the void is hidden behind the engine compartment ceiling which is covered in sound insulating material.
Does anyone share this problem? Has anyone accessed the void?

Is the creak coming from the treads themselves or could it be coming from the engine hatch where it closes against the engine compartment? Mine has a rubber trim piece glued along that edge of the hatch, but the glue isn’t very good. If a previous owner removed the trim I could imagine some creaking there.
