Dave - I truly respect your knowledge of these boats, and your willingness to share that knowledge and offer assistance to us. To that end, I have a question that I hope you know the answer to. A little history, I have a 1994 H26. A few years back, as a result of a failed fitting in the drum of my furler, the mast came down and snapped at the spreaders when it hit the support post usually used for trailering. Fortunately, I hadn't removed it at launch, otherwise the mast probably would have gone through the bimini and stern rail. I honestly don't recall the brand of spar that was originally on it, but when my local Hunter dealer replaced it, what was used was a US Spar (Zspar). It was different enough the the mast foot was not QUITE the same as the old one, and it never fit to my satisfaction. The dealer made some aluminum shims to fit between the foot and the base, but it was always a hassle when stepping/unstepping the mast. I found the proper base on the US Spars website and ordered it. I went to exchange the bases, which brings me to my problem. I can't get the old base off! It is a stainless base, which appears to be fastened to the compression post. My question is, did they weld those bases to the top of the compression posts? I've removed the four bolts holding it in place, and it won't budge. Even gave the base a few SOLID whacks with my sledge, but it doesn't appear that it's moving. I was hoping to just remove the old and install the new, and was hoping you might have some insight. My only alternative at this point appears to be cutting the "ears" off of the old base, and tapping holes into that and mounting the new US Spars base right on top of that, but I wasn't sure how difficult cutting and tapping the existing stainless base would be. Dave, thanks again for your insight and any assistance that you might be able to provide. T J

What they did

I had a similar situation -- I can tell you what they did with mine. I had two wings that kept the new plate from fitting. They removed the wings and attached the plate to the pate that was there. You are right that the old plate was attached to the compression post making it difficult (basically impossible) to remove. I haven't had any problems. Talk to Julian at US Spars.

Compression Post

I just finished helping a friend rebed this plate. You are correct, it is welded to the compression post. We removed it to fix a leak. Not only is there sealant under the shoe it surrounds the compression post from beneath the shoe and down several inches. It makes it a challange to pull out. Before you start pull the plywood cover off the center board trunk below the dining table. Inside you will find a single screw pining the post to the base it sits on. Be sure to seal this screw when putting things back together. As you pull the post out someone will need to support the table for obvious reasons. I guess you could have the correct shoe welded on but be certain not alter the length of the post or mess up the hole location for the base screw. When replacing the post clean out the old bedding material and use plenty putting everything back. Wait to completely torque the screws for the shoe until the sealant sets up. It makes for a better seal. Good Luck, Jeff

Kim, Check the Link and Call Quick

I'd tow the boat down there let them install it and go sailing, might as well make a vacation out of it. http://www.usspars.com/products/specialdeals.asp

z spar and us spars

z spar supplied the masts for Hunter for a long time. The owners then bought out Kenyon Isomat and moved to Charlotte. Everyone at both facilities was laid off. Big mistake. Anyway it was only four folks that transferred to Charlotte from Florida. Those folks were not in favor of the transaction and eventually quit with all the problems created by the owners. Bill collectors knocking at the doors and I doubt z spar will ever come back to the US. Julian with US spars opened up but no relation to Z spar other than to buy their product. He is a great guy to work with and I believe everyone knows him as I have passed his name around. If you ever call him, just quack quack or meow meow and he will know you are crazy like me. Ha!
