cracks in gelcoat on brand new benetau

I recently bought a beneteau 323 2005. I didn't officially take possession of the boat yet since the commissioning is not finished. Last week I went to see the boat at the dealer and they showed me a few areas on deck where there are some cracks in the gelcoat. Mainly around the companionway and the mast base. Of course they will fix that before they deliver the boat. They told me it's not gonna show at all after and not to worry about it.I can't help it I do worry about it. Is this common on a brand new boat? I know it's only cosmetic damage but what if the repairs don't last?I didn't expect that kind of problems on a new boat. I almost wish I didn't see the cracks and didn't know about it. But on the other hand I'm glad the dealer didn't hide it from me.I'd like to know if some of you have been in the same situation.Thanks

Enjoy your new boat

You are buying a great boat and you have a wonderful dealer. Most dealers I don't think would have pointed something like this out. Count yourself lucky and enjoy your boat. Don't give this a second thought.--Dan

Just the beginning

Those cracks are a way of life with boats. I own a 1996 Beneteau and I spend some money every season to keep it in check. I love my boat but production boats are built by cost per pound...and that's a fact. We all want lower purchase costs for these boats but eventually will pay in the end. Cracks are no big deal, but keep an open eye and mind for what causes them. The materials used may be thin in certain areas so watch out for them and be sure to notify the dealer along with written documentation as a record. Have Beneteau and the dealer held accountable for the product they sell. Also, find the best fiberglass and gelcoat repair guy and speak to him about the correct method of repair. That way he can educate you on the correct method of repair. Something makes me think the warranty work might be nothing more that a cosmetic patch, only to return long after the warranty period is long past.It's your money...

JP those cracks are nothing to worry about. The dealer will take care of them and you should be good to go. I have done a number of new boat surveys and have seen them before not only on BeneteauEnjoy your new boatCharlie

I noticed a few cracks on both sides of the transom, about 1 1/2 inch long on my boat when it was just over a year old. I got some gelcoat from BeneteauUSA and knowing where they were I can't see them. Paul's right. Beneteau builds a solid boat, but production boat all have this problem.
