As I have spent 3 nights on my H31, which I love, I hear a crackling noise towards the aft of the boat. I am sure the only reason I notice it at this time is because everything is so quiet. It sounds like a bowl of rice krispies to be honest. Any idea what it is? Thanks. Tom S/V T2K

Tiny things

They are tiny shrimp-like things, I'm assured, that are harmless. A scientist can give you a more precise answer.

Snap, crackle, and pop...

Actually it IS Rice Crispies washed down the sink of the boat next door... No, seriously most poeple seem to agree that it's either little shrimp or the bivalves that live around the pilings. I know that noise well and it is a little strange at first, nothing to worry about though just little sea animals popping away...

Sounds like your breaking up!!

We had the same question on our first trip on the Intracoastal Waterway. Shrimp like creatures is the correct answer. Actually does sound like rice crispies. No Problem!!

Snapping shrimp

No kidding - it is probably snapping shrimp. They can put up an amazing racket. I used to be an antisubmarine warfare pilot in the Navy, and sometimes we'd lose track of the enemy sub because of the noise these things put in the water. If you are ever in St Augustine in springtime and try to stay at Conch House Marina, you better be prepared for a noisy night!
