What Area of the Boat

I have had a 340 for 5 years and haven't experienced this sound. Can you give us an idea what area of the boat is generating it?

Shrimp

It is absolutely nothing to worry about! South of about Pt.Conception, there exists some form of crustacean, a type of shrimp, I think, that make that noise. When you first hear it through the hull, it can be quite alarming. Those of us who came from Northern California would always be very concerned when first we heard the noise. But, it is normal, and has nothing to do with the boat you are on, but rather the water you are in.Eventually, you won't even notice it.

Seafood combo platter

I know the noise and it is a little troublesome a first. Sounds almost like a tiny electical fire popping away. It might be shrimp or possibly the mussels and clams that live around the pilings at the dock, I don't usually notice it when anchored out. In any case you just have to get used to it, I think it's from some sort of sea life...

Speaking of Crackling Noise...

..my wife and I were once having breakfast and suddenly the crackling noise intensified so much we couldn't hear each other. I climbed out to see what was up and the boat was tugging on the lines as if a wake hit it. It was an an earthquake. Rick D.

I Remember Reading an Account

of an English guy who sailed to the Caribbean somewhere and thought he had a rat on board because at night he heard the same sort of noise. He spent a week not being able to sleep and trying to drive the rat out. After trying to smoke him out of the boat he found out from the others in the marina it was the crabs making the noise and he never did have a rat on board at all.

Temp Change?

We had this a lot on our old 37C, especially in the early morning. I thought it was temp changes in the hull as sunlight hit it.

pistol shrimp

What you're hearing is the Twistclaw Pistol Shrimp, Alpheus californiensis. If you REALLY want to hear them, try night diving on any southern cal reef. Click on the link below for a pic of the little noisemaker.

Not just the West Coast!

We encountered the same thing in Norfolk, VA a few years ago. We thought it might be the Navy subs but heard from the locals about the tiny shrimp.

SELL THE BOAT (#$%$#)

Roger: Your hull is cracking apart! ABANDON SHIP IMMEDIATELY!!! OK, just kidding. Soon after I purchased out 31 in the mid-80's, we were anchored out one night when I head the same noise. This was at the time when the dreaded osmosis problem was "surfacing" (pun intended). All I could think of was that the hull on my practically new boat was blistering apart right under me. Needless to say I didn't get a lot of sleep that night and provided everyone in our Navy Sailing group a hearty laugh when they heard why I was so bleary-eyed the next morning! I still get kidded about it from a few of the folks who were there! My advice is to lay back and enjoy the concert. Smooth Sailing. Tim L. (S/V "TIDE") Chesapeake Bay

snap crackle pop

Spent two weekends on the sole trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my boat. Zero sleep! My 10 yr old said sounds like shrimp in a bait bucket; so I assume like the rest that the shrimp are hitting the hull and or schools of fish hit the hull when running from bigger fish.
