We have a 2004 Beneteau 311 and noticed a crack in the rudder post fiberglass, allowing sea water to enter. Has anyone else had this problem? Should it be covered under warranty? Thanks.

Rudder cracks

Yes, we have that issue with our B321. I am told this is relatively common for water to get in there and then crack when frozen. Not sure if this is covered by warranty or insurance. I drillled a small hole in the rudder and drained the water out. I will get it repaired this fall and drain the water out each year. I am told many people drain their rudders every year. Would like to know from this forum if indeed that is really common...

Got this email from a company which make rudders which apparently do not soak up water... Anyone have experience with this company?

Dear Chris:
Thank you for your interest in IdaSailor Marine!
I had a message that you've expressed interest in a replacement
spade rudder for your BENNETEAU 321.We build all of our rudders
from solid blanks of HDPE so that water absorption, cracking or delamination
are no longer an issue. We also utilize stainless steel for the rudder post and
internal webbing. You will notice a dramatic difference in overall performance
due to our NACA foil shape. I've attached our spade rudder worksheet for you to
review. If you have questions or would like a price quote feel free to contact me...
Best Regards
Peter
