Cracked encapsulated keel Oday 28

Has any had any experience with repairing a crack in an encapsulated keel. Evidently we did not trailer the boat properly. We did not know about the crack until we got the boat in the water and noticed water in the bilge. We are in an inland lake. The boat is a 1979 Oday 28. We have been back in the water for about 8 weeks before we pulled the boat back out. We also discovered a second problem we had applied interlux micron CSC the summer of 2014. The boat was launched Aug 2016. Now 8 weeks later it's flaking off in chips. We put interlux interprotect as our barrier coat. Any ideas on this issue as well?

Crack may be structural and not simply a "fill and forget" kind of crack.. Time to do some grinding and investigation to see what you are dealing with. May be prudent to jack the hull a little to get a better idea of what to do. Probably will require some fiberglass and grinding to put the strength back into holding the keel attached. Be careful..

It is causing water in the bilge so I do think it should be re-glassed. Just not sure how to do that. It is not accessible from inside the boat without cutting up the floor. Can all the work be done outside? I was hoping to get some "how to" advice.

keel bolts in bilge area accessable? Photo please to help us for better responses. Generally when sitting on a trailer, the weight of the boat is on the keel/keel tray. I would tend to think some more information is needed first.

no keel bolts. i had a smaller crack in the same area. it was shallow though, not leaking water to the bilge. the keel stepped mast also dumps water to the bilge. verify water ingress location first. for fixing superficial cracks, there are many articles. if indeed cracked through, seek recommendations for a good repair yard in your area.

It has been leaking just sitting at the dock at a rate of about 2.5" in the bilge over a 24 hour period. We are located in an inland lake so only 2 marinas on the lake with not much advice. The repair with them would likely cost more than the boat is worth.

You need to do structural fiberglass work. My cal had adequate access to the bilge....... too bad you can't get in enough to at least see.....

This is something like what has to be done.. The fiberglass there should be on the order of a half inch/three quarters of an inch thick or more and the crack may be long enough to compromise the keel-to-hull joint.. It must be addressed, because that is what holds the keel on the boat.

whole different scenario Kloudie: The encapsulated keel is not a bolted or fastened on keel, it is entirely part of the hull only, no bolt on, simply built into the hull with frp...

I tend to be more nervous about my keel, so keep a close eye on it. Good news: my repair this spring is in place nicely this fall. Ground out, filled with epoxy reinforced with micro-fibers.

the 322 is a victim of poor layup schedule, and the shoe for the keel was only 1/4" thick. The bolted on keel has improper support to keep it in place

Thanks for the links. This is the first information that I've seen on the issue with the oday keels. I wish this keel was as straight forward as the sunfish. I know it will need to be ground out to see the extent of the crack and to make a strong repair. I wish we had more boat yard options inland. I spoke to a guy today that sounded fairly knowledgable at a rate of $150/hour.
